Overview • The Ontario Graduate Scholarship is a prestigious award valued at $15,000, which is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels. • The province of Ontario contributes two-thirds and Brock University provides one-third. • For the 2009-2010 year, 2,000 scholarships will be awarded. Of these, 60 scholarships will be awarded to students who have been admitted to Canada as visitors with a temporary resident visa (student visa).

Eligibility Requirements • Student can be enrolled part-time at the time of application, but must be full-time in an Ontario university (Master’s or PhD) when taking up the award. • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have a study permit dated no later than November 19, 2008 • 80% average in the last 20 half credit courses • You can receive a lifetime maximum of four years of government-funded student awards. Awards received under the following programs are counted toward this lifetime maximum: NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR and OGS

  4. Eligibility Requirements • You cannot hold an NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR or OGSST at the same time as an OGS award. • Receive up to two OGS awards at the master’s level. The award is tenable during either the first or second year of your master’s degree program, but not after the second year. • Receive up to four OGS awards at the doctoral level. The awards are tenable during the first five academic years of your doctoral degree program, but not after the fifth year.

Eligibility Requirements • You must be a full-time student in an approved graduate program for the tenure of the award. • Must hold the award for either two or three consecutive terms. • You may hold other awards that, together, have a maximum value of $10,000 per year. You may accept RA, TA positions while holding an OGS award. • You cannot be employed more than an average of 10 hours per week. Everyone should apply for an OGS award!

Go to the following website: https://osap.gov.on.ca 2. Click on “English or French” 3. Refer to left hand side, scroll down to “Grants and Bursaries” – then left click 4. Scroll down centre of page to section titled, “Learning more”

Under the section titled, “Grants, Bursaries, Fellowships and Scholarships for Full time students” refer to second paragraph and scroll to “non-repayable assistance requiring a separate application” then left click 7. Scroll down to Ontario Graduate Scholarships and left click

  8. Application Process Instructions to Apply for the 2009-2010 Ontario Graduate Scholarships 1. Go to the following website: https://osap.gov.on.ca 2. Click on “English or French” 3. Refer to the right hand side of page to the section titled, “Log in to apply online, check your status or update your file”, AND left click – “LOG IN” 4. Applicants will now complete the required information (i.e. Social Insurance Number, Password)

  9. Application Process 5. Left click – “LOG IN NOW” 6. Scroll down to Ontario Graduate Scholarship and left click 7. Applicants will now begin to complete the 2009-2010 OGS Application

Application Package A complete Ontario Graduate Scholarship application package must contain the following: • Page 1 – Personal Data • Page 2 – Education Information • Page 3 – Notice, Consent, Declaration and Signature page of Applicant-completed and signed by student • Page 4 – Additional Education Information (if applicable) • Student Checklist – completed and signed by student

Application Package • Temporary Resident Visa Student Class documentation – (if applicable) • Summary Sheet – items 5-10 completed and signed by student • Academic Assessment Report – completed and signed by Referee • Attachment to the Academic Assessment Report, if provided – completed and signed by Referee • Academic Assessment Report – completed and signed by Referee • Attachment to the Academic Assessment Report, if provided – completed and signed by Referee

Application Package • Official/original University transcripts, undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) • Statement of Interest (Master’s) or Plan of Study (Doctoral) • List of Significant Academic Accomplishments • List of Scholarships or Awards Official transcripts for academic studies completed up to August 31, 2008.

Application Tips • Change form should only be used if there are changes to your OGS application, such as: Student number Name, address and phone number Birthdate Citizenship status Discipline code and Level of Study for Proposed and Current Studies Number of awards • All documents must be Arial 12 point font • Only official transcripts from studies done in Canadian and American universities. No certified photocopies will be accepted

Application Tips • The Summary Sheet must show the Proposed Level of Study NOT the Current Level of Study • Page 3 - Additional Education Information – if student has more than 2 additional previous studies, this page can be copied • Do not include blank forms i.e. if no submission for scholarship or academic accomplishments • Special circumstances may be included at the bottom of the List of Academic Accomplishments page.

  15. Application Process • No faxed reference letters. • The Academic Assessment Reports are now PDF fillable forms. • Provide Referees with your CV, transcripts and a copy of your Statement of Interest (Master’s) or Plan of Study (Doctoral).

  16. Application Tips • Summary sheets MUST BE COMPLETED • Do not submit a resume or curriculum vitae with your application • If you do not have a Social Insurance Number a dummy will be provided • If you have an average below 80, i.e. 79.8 you are not eligible • OGS award winners are not automatically renewed. You must submit a new application each year.

  17. Successful Award Winner • You will receive notification on or about April 13, 2009, concerning the outcome of the competition. • Notice of Acceptance must be completed and proof of eligibility submitted. 1. photocopy of a valid Social Insurance Number card; and 2. photocopy of proof of Canadian citizenship or Protected person or Permanent resident status or Temporary resident visa student class • The scholarship will be paid out along with your funded package.

Remember to: • Follow instructions: Font size, margins, page limits, etc. • Be clear and concise • Proofread for spelling and grammar • Provide needed documentation • Choose references with care and contact them NOW • Be aware of the October 3, 2008 deadline date Good Luck in applying for your OGS Scholarship!
