Welcome to Student Support Services Program at City College The Student Support Services Program is a Federal Opportunity Program for undergraduate students in colleges and universities across the country. In 2009-10, the Program was offered in 946 colleges and served 198,057 undergraduates The goal of SSS is to increase the retention and graduation rates of students. SSS provides opportunities for academic development in students and motivates them to successfully complete their undergraduate program and transition into graduate and professional programs.   3. At City College the SSS Program has been in existence for 28years. • Over 94 new students joined the program in 2009-10 • 16% or 87 students were freshmen • In the last 10 years the Program has served over 5,000 undergraduates Student Support Services Program Open House

The main goal of the Student Support Services Program at City College is to provide students with a supportive environment of faculty, counselors, tutors, peer mentors to assist them to meet their academic and career goals. Each student of the program is assigned a counselor who meets students on a one-to-one basis as long as the student is enrolled in college. Each student who seeks tutoring is assigned a tutor for the semester. Students may also be assigned a mentor CCNY entering freshmen and transfers who enroll in SSS will be assigned a mentor available to meet and advise them for one year. Counseling Component • Academic • Assist Selection of courses • Develop Undergraduate Academic Program Plan • Advocate for students • Explain and clarify academic policies and procedures • Intervene on behalf of students to Academic Standards, and Academic Divisions • Refer students to tutoring programs • Career • Assist students in making career decisions • Inform students of career opportunities • Refer students to Career Center • Personal • Assist students resolve personal problems • Refer students to the Wellness and Counseling Center • Financial Aid • Assist students complete FAFSA Renewals • Inform students of scholarships • Intervene on behalf of students to receive financial aid Student Support Services Program Open House

  10. SSSP Grant Aid • Students recommended by SSSP Counselors • Must receive Pell Grant • Must be full-time • Amount of aid determined by financial need Student Support Services Program Open House

Tutoring Component • One-on-one tutoring in core requirements, engineering, science, humanities and social science courses • Group tutoring in math courses • Access to computers in Computer lab • Extended hours during exam periods • Textbooks for loan and study available at Center Student Support Services Program Open House

Student Support Services Program Outcomes • Persistence Rates: defined as percentage of all participants served by SSS who will enroll in the fall of the next academic year or graduate with a Bachelors degree • 2006-07 89% • 2007-08 91% • 2008-09 90% • Good Academic Standing defined as percentage of all participants served by SSS who met the performance level required to stay in good academic standing at CCNY • 2006-07 95% • 2007-08 93% • 2008-09 94% Student Support Services Program Open House

  24. Eligibility for Program • US Citizen or Permanent Residence • Must fit in the following Taxable Income levels : Student Support Services Program Open House

Eligibility (Continued) Must be in any ONE of these categories • Must be enrolled in or taken Math 190,195,80,150 • Must have enrolled in any Summer Program • Must have a High School average 80-90 • Must have a Critical Reading OR Math OR Writing SAT score of <480 • Must have a College GPA >2.3 • Must be enrolled in an ESL course or in the past enrolled in ESL Student Support Services Program Open House

  26. Application Form • Complete all sections of the application form • If you do not know your SAT score ignore the question • Let us know if you have taken AP classes • Let us know how you heard of the program • In the give slip, please write a paragraph telling us why you want to be part of SSS • Complete the form and submit it to our office in NAC 6/148 or hand it to the Zitrin Scholars, peer mentors at the end of the Open house Student Support Services Program Open House
