Gigabit Ethernet Differential Mode Delay • Problem when using longwave (1000Base-LX and other technologies) laser transmission over multimode fiber - MMF was designed to support LED transmissions. • Fault in the refractive index of a small (<5%) amount of installed MMF cables causes communication problems • Shortened distances • Total lack of communication • Fault can be corrected (if exhibited) using an adapter that offsets (“conditioned launch”) the laser beam • Can occur in any technology, including ATM
