  9. NEW EXPLORATION CONCEPTS • FOCUS IN: • Defining new reservoir targets such as the Pucará carbonates to open up new exploration areas in the Basin, • Paleo-StratigraphicTraps.

  10. Historical Exploration Strategies for Oil Exploration in the Marañon Basin • PAST: • Presence of paleo-structures: • Was the main criteria to defining Cretaceous exploration targets. In the past, the paleo-structures needed to be in place in the early Terciary (to catch the primary and principal pulse of Chonta generated oils produced), to decided an exploratory well.

  11. PRESENT (PARSEP): • The key to exploration, is in the definition of paleo-traps (Stratigraphic or structural) , and in the remigration route of that hydrocarbon during the Quechua deformation into younger aged structures, this concept, open up new areas of exploration. • Presence of large-scale stratigraphic traps and perhaps their dominance over structural traps, in pre-Quechua time (Neogene).

  12. Pucará Group Carbonates • Viable exploration target in western Marañon Basin. Exist only four penetrations into the Pucará(located in the southwestern most corner of the Basin). The four wells are: • Orellana 1X: intersected upper supratidal to continental facies red beds and evaporites of the Pucará Group • Santa Lucia 1X: intersected a Pucará section equivalent to the one encountered in the Orellana Well • Loreto 1X: intersected evaporites, redbeds and tight carbonates interpreted to be representative of a Pucará supratidal facies • Shanusi 1X: intersected gas bearing porous carbonates of an interpreted intratidal environment.

  24. MAIN CONCLUSIONS • Extension: 20’000,000 ha. • Cumulated production: 871 MMbbls. • Seismic digital data: 32,000 kms., SEG-Y format. • Well digital data: 105 exploratory wells, LAS format. • Additional new studies as Geochemical, Tectonics, hydrodynamics, Magnetic and Gravity made by PARSEP group. • Three Petroleum System: 1) Cretaceous: Chonta/Raya Formations (fms). 2) Triassic/Jurassic: Pucará Group and 3) Devonian: Cabanillas Formation (fm).

  25. MAIN CONCLUSIONS • New Prospects : a) Ungarachi, Pastaza, Morona, Rimachi, etc (Blocks B-C), b) Majaz, Cuinico South, etc (Block E) c) Shanusi offset Prospect, etc. • Exploration key: definition of paleo-traps, not just structures, and hydrocarbon remigration route during the Quechua deformation. • New concepts: Charge of remigration oil from breached paleo-stratigraphic and structural traps open up new areas of exploration in the Basin.

  26. MAIN CONCLUSIONS • Exploration focused on Cretaceousreservoirs. • Emphasizes the importance of defining new reservoir targets (Pucará carbonates) to open up new exploration viable plays, mainly in western Marañon areas. • Only four penetrations into the Pucará sequence (southwestern part of the Basin), Paleozoic targets are under-explored.
