  5. What is Anxiety? • Anxiety: is the condition of feeling uneasy or worried about what may happen. • Occasional anxiety is normal and manageable and is a natural response to life events. Depression Activity: • Pass out worksheet on Depression • Students are to draw a picture of what you think of when you hear the word DEPRESSION • Students will then partner up or work in groups of 3 and discuss their picture. • The teacher will then ask groups to share with the class. Put the picture under the camera to be projected on the screen.

  7. What is Depression? Depression: is a prolonged feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, and sadness which is not easy to manage. Feelings of sadness affects everyone, but depression usually lasts longer and may produce symptoms that do not go away over time. Depression is a serious condition that may REQUIRE medical help. It’s one of the most common mental health concerns among teens.

  8. Warning Signs of Depression Activity: With a partner, List on the iPad or a sheet of paper possible warning signs of depression. Once the list is complete, write your list on the dry erase board. If your warning sign is already on the board, do not write it again. See page 116: figure 5.2 for text book warning signs of depression.

Symptoms of Teen Depression • Many young people who are suffering from depression don’t act sad or seem outwardly different to their family or friends. • Symptoms include: • Irritable or restless mood • Withdrawal from friends and activities • A change in appetite or weight • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness • A sense of hopelessness

Causes & Effects of Depression • Depression can be caused by physical, psychological, social/environmental, or genetic. • Physically: caused by a medical condition or illness. • Psychological: surviving a traumatic life event. • Social/environmental: living in poverty. • Genetic: family history of depression.

  11. Other symptoms of depression • Changes in thinking: They may have trouble concentrating and making decisions. May have self-destructive thoughts. • Changes in feelings: They may not feel pleasure in things they once enjoyed. • Apathy: a lack of strong feeling, interest, or concern. • Changes in behavior: May become emotional, change in eating and sleeping, poor hygiene and withdraw from others

Getting Help for Anxiety and Depression Talk to supportive people Get more physically active Consider volunteering When Anxiety and Depression persist… How to identify appropriate community resources providing information on mental health and suicide prevention Watch for changes in mood, sleep and energy levels Talk to a parent, other trusted adult, and seek help from a counselor, social worker or other health care professional.
