  2. Bedbug Identification • Size - appleseed • Color– reddish brown • Shape– flat & oval • Males - pointed abdomens • Females - rounded abdomens. • Odor – sweet & musty • Movement - crawl

  3. Eggs Pear-shaped & white 300 in one female’s lifetime Attach to surfaces & hatch within 10-14 days Nymphs “Young” bedbugs Smaller & lighter in color Stage lasts 6 weeks Adult Life Cycle

  4. Bedbug Feeding • Live on human or animal blood • Feed at night • Pierce skin and suck blood • Feed for 3-12 minutes • Swell and turn bright red after feedings • Can live over a year without feeding

  5. Similar to mosquito bites Red with darkened center May take a few days to show up Bedbug Bites

  6. Bedbug Bites • Symptoms • Itching • Swelling • Painless • Common Sites • Arms & Legs • Face & Neck • Treatment • Soap and water • Anti-itch cream (to avoid scratching) • Should resolve within 3-10 days without treatment

  8. Worldwide Common in developing countries Rising in the United States due to: Lack of awareness Increase in international travel Resistance to insecticides Where are Bedbugs?

  10. Where are Bedbugs? • Crowded Lodging • Hotels • Shelters • Dormitories • Military barracks • Apartment complexes • Specific Locations • Mattresses • Bed frames • Box springs • Headboards • Sofas & chairs • Cracks & crevices *Bed bugs can easily spread where people come and go frequently.

  13. Prevention of Bedbugs • Eliminate clutter • Vacuum regularly • Report cracks, crevices, and holes to be sealed • Inspect secondhand items before bringing home • Place protectors over pillows, mattresses, and box springs

  16. If You See Bedbugs… • Report to management IMMEDIATELY! • Clean & vacuum area • Wash clothes & linens in HOT water • Dry in HIGH heat for 20 minutes • Limit visitors to prevent spreading • Last Resort: discard infested belongings
