Who are we? • National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Uganda • Is a Public Corporation - 100% Government • Established in 1972 with a mandate to provide water and sewerage services in Urban Areas on commercial & financially viable basis • Currently serves in 66 towns • 3.4 million people served • 2,263 staff with 26% female

Strategic interventions & Reforms Undertaken over the years by NWSC • Short term high impact performance improvement programmes to ensure financial sustainability • Adoption of private sector like management principles of commercialization • Increased management autonomy/decentralization • Performance contracts at all levels

Strategic interventions & Reforms Undertaken over the years by NWSC …./2 • Staff restructuring aimed at aligning available skills with the increased mandate of the corporation • Programmes for Infrastructure service delivery, water stabilization & water quality service improvement to increase accessibility & reliability • Stakeholder engagement (water community clubs, school water & sanitation clubs)

  5. Strategic interventions & Reforms Undertaken over the years by NWSC …./3 • Capital investment e.g. 1st faecal sludge treatment unit commissioned 2014 with capacity 5000m3/day, new water works 240,000 m3/day for Kampala

The NWSC External Services Unit What the ESU does • Share knowledge and expertise with the external market by utilizing in-house capabilities and expertise thus enhancing South-South as well as North-South Cooperation. • Creation of synergies within utility providers that are result in an uplift of performance thereby providing the basis for sustainable operations in the long-term.

Opportunities • The NWSC as an operator has the knowledge, experience and skill to assist utilities in the south deal with the challenges they face. • The NWSC has tested and tried solutions that have worked and can be easily be scaled up. • There is urgent demand in the region. • For real success to be registered interventions in utilities must be coupled with investments.

  14. Opportunities…/2 • Dynamic business environment and rapidly changing technologies mean that NWSC and ESU have to keep pace otherwise become irrelevant hence the need for further enhancement of NWSC’s own capacities.
