  1. Explain how the Schlieffen Plan led to trench warfare.

  2. Intro -SchlieffenPlan • Alfred von Schlieffen, German Army Chief of Staff • France to be speedily defeated: 90% of Germany's armed forces to attack France • it would take Russia six weeks to organize its large army for an attack on Germany • Schlieffen suggested a scythe-like attack through Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg

  3. the Germans were held up by the Belgian Army shocked by the Russian Army's advance into East Prussia surprised by how quickly the British reached France and Belgium.

  4. Problems with the Schlieffen Plan • In pairs think of the assumptions/plans that the Germans have made that may go wrong. Write down at least 5. some may think of more. • Example • If Germany use 90% of its forces on France, do they have enough back up for the Russians.

  5. Feedback • Share some of the reasons why the Schlieffen plan failed. • Reasons should include “The Germans did not count on the entry of the British into the war” • “The Germans assumed that Belgium wouldn’t get involved. “ • “The Germans didn’t know that the Russians would mobilize so quickly” • “The Germans assumed that their soldiers were strong and would take out all the defenses” • “The Germans didn’t know that the Alliance system would draw other countries into the war” • “The Germans thought they were more powerful than they really were?

  6. Over by Christmas! Or perhaps not…

  7. Results • The Belgians stopped the Germans from invading France • France fought back • The British entered the war on the side of France and Belgium • What do you think would happen?

  8. Page 115 of Peace and War • Copy out the line of trenches on to your own map • Trench System: • Along Western Front(475 miles) • S- shaped • Usually two meters deep

  9. ..and thus began the trenches… • The Schlieffen Plan had not succeeded. • The German hopes of a swift and decisive victory had been frustrated. • However, the German Army had not been beaten and its successful retreat and the building of trenches between the North Sea to the Swiss Frontier ended all hope of a short war.
