  1. UPO Oct 12, 2012 News and MiscellaneousUPO Oct. 12 2012Didier Contardo, Jeff Spalding • LHCC and RRB • Upgrade week Oct29-Nov02 • WBS, Cost and Schedule • AOB • See talk at MB Oct 15 2012 • https://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?contribId=7&resId=0&materialId=slides&confId=211695

  2. Pixel and HCAL TDRs • Presentations at the LHCC session Sept. 25 • https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=208722 • Pixel TDR CERN-LHCC-2012-016 ; CMS-TDR-011: • http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1481838/files/CMS-TDR-011.pdf • HCAL TDR CERN-LHCC-2012-015 ; CMS-TDR-010: • http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1481837/files/CMS-TDR-010.pdf • “The LHCC endorses the HCAL and pixel upgrades without reservations” Congratulations to the projects and editors • CMS FB sub-committee (chair K. Fountas) • Reviewed and approved the Pixel and HCAL upgrade costbooks • RRB session Oct. 30 • Document on “Financial plan for CMS upgrade” includes revised top level cost breakdown of Pixel (17.1 MCHF) and HCAL (8.0 MCHF) upgrades, funding profiles and early need in 2013

  3. UPO Oct 12, 2012 LHCC Report on the Pixel and HCAL TDRs The report form the LHCC is very positive – we’ll provide a link to it as soon as it is available. Below is some text form the report. On the work in LS1 Upgrade related tasks slated for LS1 are: (1) muon upgrades, including the installation of the 4’th layer endcap CSC and RPC chambers and the YE4 shielding wall, plus displacement off-detector of part of the barrel muon electronics (2) the first stage of HCAL phototransducer consolidation/upgrade (HO,HF); (3) installation of the 45mm outer diameter beampipe, necessary for the subsequent pixel tracker upgrade; and (4) installation of optical splitters in the Electromagnetic Calorimeter and Cathode Strip Chamber read-out to allow commissioning of the trigger upgrade in parallel to operation. The LHCC endorses the CMS program of work for Long Shutdown 1 (LS1). On theTDRs The documentation included detailed work plans, credible schedules and budget estimates and well-motivated physics justifications … The LHCC congratulates CMS for this achievement. … much more on the physics justification. They were satisfied. The HCAL electronics upgrade provides connectivity to the foreseen trigger upgrade in parallel to the existing trigger/DAQ system. Such an approach allows installation of the future system without affecting the running system. The LHCC recognizes the benefits of this implementation approach. It is expected that the TDR for the trigger, anticipated in March 2013, will extend the justification beyond operational considerations. The LHCC endorses the HCAL and pixel upgrades without reservations.

  4. L1-Trigger upgrade TDR preparation • Conceptual Design review • Part 1 (Oct. 4) : • To reviewoverallstrategy and status of the project • To prepare part 2 • Part 2 (late Nov.) : • To review and approve the TDR content Oct. Nov. Dec. Jan. Feb. Mar. • Review process similar to Pixel and HCAL TDRs – very tight schedule CDR 1 follow-up Upg. Week PAG Pre-approval ARC Approval TDR release to LHCC LHCC session CDR 1 CDR 2 TDR CMS subcom review TDR CMS wide Cost FB subcom reviews LHCC review

  5. Main recommendations from CDR part 1 (Detailed recommendations can be found in interim report) • Form a task force, dedicated to deliver the performance studies in time for the TDR • Prepare documentation on motivation to develop the two CT configuration options, the overhead of resources needed and the decision criteria and schedule. • Prepare a resource plan for the first stage CT upgrade for post-LS1, to minimize impact on schedule for the final system  For items 2 and 3: Dedicated follow-up meeting during the Upgrade Week (Oct. 29) to evaluate and recommend on first stage • Consider a layer architecture for Muon upgrade based on CSCTF, OL and SC (DT) new developments  Dedicated follow-up review meeting during the Upgrade Week (Oct. 29) to evaluate technical and schedule implications before final recommendation • Use existing trigger processor boards for other upgrades (DTTF/GMT/GT). Electronics and Online coordination to oversees the definition of common specifications, generic framework firmware blocks and control protocols • Develop consolidated costbook; schedule and milestones; and resource plan  CDR part 2 (late Nov.), pre-view during upgrade week

  6. Upgrade week Oct. 29 https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceOtherViews.py?confId=211392&view=standard • L1- Trigger Upgrade • Follow-up of CDR part 1 on strategy and technical scope • Preparation of CDR part 2 TDR document • Presentation in WGM on Wed. • Towards longer term • Longevity of all detectors to/through phase 2 • Plans for combined physics studies • Working Group Reports (interim reports due to MB by end of 2012) • Project and cross coordination meetings • Upgrade Week Jun. 3 2013 • At Hamburg/DESY • Considering a focus on an internal document describing goals, requirements, and options for the Phase 2 scope • CMS discusses the document ~summer 2013 • By late 2013 develop decision path to define scope for TP

  7. UPO Oct 12, 2012 Upgrade week Oct29-Nov02 The agenda here includes only the plenary-like meetings https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceOtherViews.py?confId=211392&view=standard Please send email with links to agendas for parallel working meetings and we’ll add them to this agenda We will use vidyo for the plenary-like meetings! (in fact CMS will transition completely to vidyo in November) Make sure you’re ready http://information-technology.web.cern.ch/services/fe/vidyo

  8. UPO Oct 12, 2012 WBS, Cost and Schedule • With the experience for HCAL and Pixels we’ve updated the guidelines for WBS, cost and schedule. • See the draft at this link – please send comments https://cms-docdb.cern.ch/cgi-bin/DocDB/RetrieveFile?docid=11528&version=1&filename=Guidelines_WBS_Cost_Schedule_v1.pdf MOUs • The CMS Construction MOU will be “extended” as a high level agreement between funding agencies • Under this framework there will be an appendix for each project, plus one special one for the common items / common fund in the MM • Each appendix will be prepared separately – we’ll start with the TDR projects, based on the information in the costbooks • As an example – here’s an equivalent document for the present Tracker • https://cms-docdb.cern.ch/cgi-bin/DocDB/RetrieveFile?docid=3727&version=1&filename=MoU_Amend1_Si_TK.pdf • Our appendices will look something like this, maybe with simpler tables showing institution involvement by WBS and cost breakdown by funding agency.

  9. UPO Oct 12, 2012 CMS 2012 Achievements awards CB call for yearly-based students & postdocs Achievement The involved areas are: - PMs:  Tk, ECAL, HCAL, Muo, TriDas - Coordinators: Run, Trigger, Computing, Offline, PPD, and Upgrade Each area should propose 2 nominations. The deadline for nominations will be October 31st. The nominees will be announced at the November 2nd CB meeting, and the 2012 Achievement Awards ceremony will take place at the December CMS Opening Plenary Session.
