  2. Introduction Topic: Irony of the perceived future Claim: Although improvements to Science and Technology were made to benefit and convenience the human race. Ironically, this may lead to an over-reliance of S & T, the chance of us losing control over it in the future and have adverse effects to our survival overall

  3. What What technology? Technology refers to the real life applications of Science. Technology can be something as common as a mobile phone to something as complex as a spaceship.

  4. What What is the perceived future? The perceived future is when we either become over-reliant on technology or lose control of them. In the perceived future, instead of benefiting humans, technology actually turns against us and harms us instead. Examples could be global warming or malicious robots.

  5. Why Why is the perceived future so ironic? The perceived future is ironic because of the fact that we have become over-reliant on technology and is unable to live without it. E.g. We are over-reliant on electricity which leads to depletion of resources and increased greenhouse gases which causes global warming, harming us.

  6. Why Why is the perceived future so ironic? The perceived future is ironic because we may lose control of our creations and these pieces of technology might turn against us and harm us. E.g. Shown in the movie Eagle Eye and Blade Runner.

Assumptions • What are some of the assumptions we are making? • First, one assumption is that technology will continue to grow at the pace it was grown for the past hundred years. • The next assumption is that we will be able to create a piece of technology with sentience that will allow it to turn against us

  8. Assumptions • What are some of the assumptions we are making? • There is also an assumption that scientists will be unable to solve the problem arising from over-reliancy (e.g. Global Warming) by inventing another piece of technology (e.g. Planet Cooler)

Implications Although we cannot deny the fact that Science and Technology have indeed brought us many conveniences and vastly improved the quality of our lives (e.g. Extension of average lifespan through improvement of medical science, invention of transport vehicles), we may one day become over-reliant on S & T and eventually someday, we may lose control over it

  10. Implications: Over-reliancy In fact, we over-relying on S & T even today. Many of us are unable to ‘live’ without S & T in the present world (Computer, Handphones, Facebook), who knows what would happen in the future? If these happens, we will be unable to survive without the help of S & T, imagine what would happen if there was a power failure in the whole world for a week? (Extinction of Humans?)

  11. Implications: Losing Control Even worse, there is the fear of us losing control over our own inventions. If one day we create a piece of technology that is so intelligent that we loses control over it, what would happen? If we really lose control of our own inventions(due to technology gaining Sentience ) in the future, there is a high possibilty of these technologies competing with the human race for survival on Earth (and there’s a high chance we may lose).

  13. Examples: Over-reliancy A prime example of how we have become over-reliant on technology would be how we use technology in our everyday life. The usage of lifts instead of stairs, using messages and emails instead of face to face communication, using websites instead of books and libraries for information are all examples of over-reliancy.

Example: Losing Control The loss of control over our inventions would possibly be due technology surpassing human intelligence, listed below are two prime examples: The IBM supercomputer defeating World Champion Garry Kasparov in Chess in 1997. The IBM supercomputer Watson defeating World Champions: Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings in the game of Jeopardy! Which involves complex language nuances.

Counter-Examples Some of the Counter-Examples for my claim are: Invention of Hybrid Cars- This product of technology enables us to run Hybrid Cars using a combination of Electricity and Petrol, other fuels include Hydrogen gas and organic oil. Invention of Robotic Surgeons- This product of technology enables us to undergo operations without the fear of being victims of human error as mechanical surgeons are much more precise.
