  2. What does a Local Government do? • Local governments make laws to protect citizens. • It provides services such as schools, libraries, and picking up the trash. • Local governments collect taxes to pay for services. • It selects leaders through elections.

  3. Branches of Local Government • Mayor • City Council • Courts

  4. Mayor • The mayor is elected by the citizens of the community. • He/she is the leader of the community government. • They work with the city council and county commission to make laws.

  5. City Council • The city council makes and pass laws in the community. • They try and improve the city by holding town meetings. • Most city councils have five to nine members. • Must be 18 years old to be a member.

  6. County Commission • County commissioners run the county government. • Decide things like the speed limit and what roads need to be repaired. • They provide courts and provide fire and police protection.
