  1. 1691- made a royal colony. Puritans are broken spiritually, now all qualified male property holders can vote. Massachusetts

  2. Relaxed grip on colonial trade, weakly enforces Navigation laws. English officials (appointed before the Revolution) corrupt and not accustomed to American life. Their presence blocks chances for local leaders to get any power. Salutary Neglect

  3. Dutch earn independence from Spain with the help of England. Henry Hudson, supported by the Dutch West India Company, travels up Hudson River and purchases Manhattan Island New Netherlands

  4. Later New York City Secondary thought of Co. Free religion, speech, democracy not on their minds. Patroonships- feudal estates given to those who promise to settle 50 people True cosmopolitan of people. New Amsterdam

  5. Horrible, greedy leaders. NE annoyed by Dutch, won’t let them enter colonies. 1655- Swedes try to enter Colonial game, Dutch destroys them and absorbs remaining Swedes. Dutch West India Co.

  11. Bread colonies- fertile soil Abundance of rivers- get into interior fur trade. Abundance of forests- shipbuilding takes off. Harbor towns (NY and Philly) flourish The Middle Colonies

  12. Excluding NY, land plots smaller than South, but bigger than NE. Population most ethnically mixed. Quaker influence- attracts immigrants, makes land easier to get. Middle Colonies
