This document provides an overview of cholesterol, a vital lipid found in blood and body cells, as detailed in the PDO from January to September 2003. It explains the forms of cholesterol, namely LDL, HDL, and triglycerides, highlighting their essential functions such as maintaining cell membranes, hormone formation, bile salt production for digestion, and vitamin D synthesis through sunlight exposure. Notably, 85% of cholesterol is produced endogenously by the liver, while only 15% originates from dietary sources, underscoring the importance of understanding cholesterol management.
