Nine Reasons for Reading • Reading is rewarding • Reading builds a mature vocabulary • Reading makes you a better writer • Reading is hard and “hard” is necessary • Reading makes you smarter • Reading prepares you for the world of work • Reading well is financially rewarding • Reading opens the doors to college and beyond • Reading arms you against oppression --Gallagher (2003)

What the Research Says • More time spent reading had a significant effect on achievement compared to a control condition where less time was allotted for recreational reading (Wu and Samuels, 2004). • FVR [Free Voluntary Reading) results in better reading comprehension, writing style, vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical development (Krashen, 1993). • Nearly half of all Americans ages fifteen to twenty-four do not read books for pleasure (National Endowment for the Arts, 2007)

  4. SSR at Lincoln High School • Take time from all class periods • Beginning of third hour • Bell in and bell out (skinny) • 15 minute period

  5. The “Guidelines” • Kids may read books, magazines, manuals, newspapers, etc. • Students may not read textbooks or novels for classes • Students should be actively engaged during the entire 15 minutes • Teachers model the behavior

  6. Questions, Comments, Concerns? • How will we “make” kids read? • Who will monitor the staff? • What will we do with kids who do not read? • Will there be anyone to help me? • How do we make sure this is done right? • How can this help students?
