How the female reproductive system works • The female reproductive system is made up of several internal and external organs • Ovaries • Fallopian tubes • Uterus • Cervix • Vagina
Ovaries • Two almond shaped organs found deep in the pelvic area. • Ovaries produce eggs( ova) • All of the eggs that a female will ever have are in her two ovaries when she is born. • Estrogen and progesterone regulate monthly release of an egg and prepare the body for pregnancy
Female Hormones • Estrogen and progesterone are produced by the ovaries that stimulates the development of female secondary sex characteristics • Secondary sex characteristics: Breast, Widening of the hips, Pubic hair, etc.
Fallopian Tubes • A tube through which an ovum moves from an ovary to the uterus. • Each female has 2 fallopian tubes
Uterus • Is a muscular organ that receives and supports the fertilized ovum • The uterus is located between the bladder and rectum. • Uterus in its natural form is the size of your fist.
Cervix • Is lowest part of the uterus that connects to the vagina • Cervix is a cup barer between the vagina and the uterus
Vagina • Is a muscular tube that connects the uterus to the outside of the body • Also known as the birth canal
Menstrual cycle • The average menstrual cycle last 28 days • Menstruation, or breakdown and discharge of the lining exit out of the vagina • Blood and tissue are released during menstruation. This usually last 3-7 days
Ovulation • Ovulation usually occurs on the 14th day of the menstrual cycle. • Ovulation occurs when a mature a egg is released from the ovary and pushed down the fallopian tube.
