Create Your Own Delta Model Using a Paper Template

This hands-on activity allows you to design and build a delta model using a custom paper template. Start by drawing a template on A4 card and cutting it out. Fold the outer flaps upward and cut to create river edges. Once folded and assembled, color the sediment layers and secure the flaps with tape.   1. Pop-up delta

  2. The Template - You draw your own template (as below) and use for the model.The template should be drawn on A4 card.

  3. Cut out the template

  4. Fold the outer flaps upwards

  5. Cut along the two lines as far as the river edge

  6. Fold the river edges downwards

  7. Your model should now look like this

  8. Fold downwards the flaps at the delta front

  9. Colour the 3 sediment layers of the delta cross section

  10. Colour both sides

  11. Stick down(with cellotape) the outer flaps of the river section

  12. Stick down the other side

  13. Your model should now be secure, with the delta front loose

  14. Label the delta top

  15. Label the delta cross section

  16. Delta features to label in book • 1 - Distributary • 2 - Fertile delta plain • 3 - Main river channel • 4 - Top set beds (mixture of silt and clay) • 5 - Foreset beds (pebbles and sand) • 6 – Bottomset beds (mainly clay)

  17. Your model should be complete. Close your exercise book to test the model.
