  1. Photosynthesis Must love plants!!

  2. What is Photosynthesis • “Photo” = light • “synthesis” = to make or produce • Photosynthesis is the process in which organisms use light energy to make food. • Only plants, algae, & some bacteria photosynthesize

  3. Types of Organisms • Autotrophs: any organism that make their own food using the light energy (E) from the sun (plants/producers) • Examples: Trees, Flower, Grass

  4. Types of Organisms • Heterotroph: any organism that must consume other organisms in order to obtain energy. (Consumer) • Examples: Any Animal (humans)

  5. Autotrophs Need • Autotrophs need 3 essential things • Sunlight • H2O • CO2

  6. Autotrophs Produce • Autotrophs make two products • O2 - exits the organism through leaves • C6H12O6 -Remains in the organism as a food source (sugar)

  7. Photosynthesis Equation Reactants Products

  8. Law of Conservation of Matter • Matter is neither created nor destroyed, but simply changes forms. • Count the C, H, and O atoms on the reactants side. • Count the C, H, and O atoms on the products side. • What do you notice?

  9. Where Photosynthesis takes place • Photosynthesis takes place in Chloroplast. (only found in Autotrophs) • Chloroplast contain green pigments called Chlorophyll. • Chlorophyll uses the suns energy to preform photosynthesis

  10. Chloroplast

  11. Types of Energy • All organisms need to use/make energy to survive. • ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate) is a molecule that stores and transports cellular energy “cellular currency” • ADP (Adenosine Di-Phosphate) is a molecule made from ATP. Contains little energy

  12. Types of Energy • NADP+ and NADPH are also energy molecules used during photosynthesis

  13. Reactions of Photo • 1. Light reaction or Light dependent • Occurs in the Thylakoid • Sun/light energy is absorbed by the chloroplast • H2O enters the roots • ATP is produced (fuels 2nd reaction) • O2 is produced and leaves as waste • “photo” part

  14. Reactions of Photo • 2. Dark reaction or Calvin Cycle • Occurs in the Stroma • Uses ATP from the light reaction and CO2 to produce C6H12O6 • The C6H12O6 is stored in the plant then can be used as food. • “synthesis” part

  15. Photosynthesis • Occurs in Chloroplast, chlorophyll • Occurs all the time • Reactants (input) CO2 + H2O + light E • Products (output) C6H12O6 + O2 • Light energy makes chemical energy (ATP and Glucose)
