  1. Welcome to the Seaford Middle School Media Center Biography

  2. What is a Biography • It is an account of a person's life written, composed, or produced by another. Ex.: a film biography of Martin Luther King Ex.: an oral biography of your grandfather Ex.: a written biography on Michael Jordan

  3. Where can I find them? • All biographies are non-fiction and are placed in a library in their own section. • Books with a call number of 921 are on individuals. • Books with a call number of 920 are on groups of people.

  4. O.K., so I found where call number 921 is, now what? • You can look for the book using the first three letters of the persons last name. • For example if you want an individual biography… • Martin Luther King would have a call numberof 921 KIN • Michael Jordan would have a call number of 921 JOR

  5. Why would I want to look at a book that covers a group of people? • This may be helpful if the person is part of a group. • For instance you may want to look at a book on “Civil Rights Leaders” to read about Martin Luther King.

  6. Where would I find these books? • You would need to use the OPAC (Online Patron Access Catalog) located on each computer. • When you do your search and retrieve your list, look for books with a call number of 920 or 921. • Remember that 921 contains Individual Bio’s • Remember that 920 contains Group Bio’s

OPAC for SMS • Go to Internet Explorer The home page should be the “Seaford Middle School PowerPortal”. http://www.seaford.k12.de.us/sms/DEFAULT.HTM# You should see this home page on any computer in the media center. For this to work at your home you would need to put this address in you favorites

Now that you are on the SMS home page… • Go to the right hand side of the page • click on card catalog • click on search catalog • type in your search term & hit enter • Click on locations to see if the item is ‘In’, ‘Out’ or ‘Lost’. • At the bottom center of the page you’ll see that you may have more than one page of books from which to choose. It’ll look something like this… 1 - 2 - 3 - 4

  9. Congratulations!! Now, use the OPAC to look up the books you need. • Write down the call numbers. ex. 921 Kin, 920 Lid • The list will tell you if the book is • In, Out or Lost. • Wait for directions to go and find your books. • Remember only those books marked as ‘In’ will be on the shelf.
