CHAPTER 4 – C.I.S. – Pentateuch, creation, covenant, exodus • The Pentateuch. • Refers to the first five books of the Old Testament Hebrew Scriptures. • Genesis • Exodus • Leviticus • Numbers • Deuteronomy • Author = Moses and others. • There are two Creation stories in Genesis. • Although similar to other creation stories from other civilizations, the Genesis stories reveal truths about God, creation and human beings.
The First Creation story (p. 77) • Under God’s inspiration it conveys the following: • 1. There is only one God. • 2. God planned creation. • 3. Everything that God made is good. • 4. The Sabbath (7th day of rest which we refer to as Sunday) is a special day of rest and worship
The second creation story - pages 78 80 • Portays God as a potter who molds Adam’s body like a delicate sculpture. • YHWH (name for God) breathes his spirit, the breath of life which shows God’s intimacy with the first human being.(p. 78) • It describes God as compassionate who cares for Adam by planting a garden and sending animals for companionship.
The creation of eve from 2nd creation story • Eve (the woman) was created from the rib of Adam. Shows the equality and dignity of women. • Leave parents and two “become one” • Man and woman are equal and complimentary, intended to be companions in a stable union open to life and love. • Model for marriage between one man and one woman.
