Age Main Focus: ‘Generation Y’ (1980-1999) Stereotypes: • Younger Views • Our generation is known as “fiercely proud, independent, and conscious of our individuality” • Leadership, work great in teams. • Elderly Views • Known for often switching jobs • Lazy • Rely on technology • Don’t show respect Overall we are very different from the past generations.

  3. Ageism • (Cherry) “A type of discrimination that involves prejudice against people based upon their age.” • Involves holding negative stereotypes about people of different ages.

  6. Race • Today, racial stereotyping is the most prevalent in sports and everyday society. • This has been around for decades • Civil Rights Era

  7. Where this is prevalent. • The workplace • Sports • Television and other sources of media • Language/Slang

  8. Gender • Gender Stereotypes are the generalizations about the roles of each gender • Since each person has individual desires, thoughts, and feelings, regardless of their gender, these stereotypes are incredibly simplistic and do not at all describe the attributes of every person of each gender

  9. Male Stereotypes • Restrict emotions • Avoid being feminine • Focus on toughness and aggression • Be self-reliant • Make achievement the top priority • Be non-relational • Objectify sex • Be homophobic

Female Stereotypes • Women are supposed to have "clean jobs” • Secretaries, teachers, and librarians • Nurses, but not doctors • Women are not as strong as men • Women are supposed to make less money than men • Women are not politicians • Women are quieter than men and not meant to speak out • Women are supposed to be submissive and do as they are told • Women are supposed to cook and do housework • Women are responsible for raising children • Women are supposed to look pretty and be looked at • Women do not play video games • Women are flirts • Women are never in charge
