Ziele

  4. M&D hosted at MPI-MET Principal Investigator Prof. Dr. G. Brasseur Advisory Board (WLA) Chairman Prof. Dr. H.von Storch Head of M&D Dr. M. Lautenschlager Model Infrastructure Model Application Scientific Data Management Interfaces+Processing ICSU World Data Center for Climate M&D's organsational structure

  5. ICSU WDC System: Total: 54 WDC's (China 9, Europe 12, Asia-Pacific 10, Russia, 7, USA 15) WDC system was created to archive and distribute data collected from the observational programs of the 1957-1958 International Geophysical Year. Major objectives are to collect and archive geophysical data as widely as possible, and to provide free access to these data for all scientists around the globe. Changes with respect to e-science and an suggested electronic Geophysical Year (eGY 2007-2008): Data discovery – improving records of what data holdings exist and where; Permission – encouraging the owners of data to make them available to the international scientific community and to provide descriptive (meta-data) information; and Access and sharing – enabling users to obtain and share data, often from distributed sources, in an appropriate,machine-readable form. WDC for Climate

  6. Start: Approved in January 2003 Maintenance: Model and Data (M&D/MPIMET) and German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) Mission: Data for climate research are collected, stored and disseminated ICSU Policy: long-term archiving and unrestricted data access for scientists Restriction: Only climate data products, no raw data storage. Content:Emphasis is spent on climate modelling and related data products. Co-operation:with thematically corresponding data centres like WDC-MARE (Bremen) and WDC-RSAT (Oberpfaffenhofen) URL: http://www.mad.zmaw.de/wdcc/

  7. Climate Model Data (Continuous stream of new data) IPCC DDC (Data Distribution Centre) Will be continued for the Fourth Assessment Report CEOP (Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period) Model output retention and handling Centre Part of WCRP that was motivated by GEWEX with focus on water and energy cycles within the climate system (01.10.2002 – 31.12.2004) Observational Data Model related observations: ERA15/40 (ECMWF), NCEP 40 Y. Reanal. Instrumental data: WOCE (World Ocean Circulation Experiment) Earth observations: Access to SST's from NOAA AVHRR in cooperation with WDC RSAT (distributed archive) Project Support (encourage Good Scientific Practice) HOAPS (Hamburg Ocean Atmosphere Parameters and Fluxes from Satellite Data) CARIBIC (Civil Aircraft for Regular Investigation of the Atmosphere Based on an Instrumentation Container), MPI Mainz Different model applications WDC-CLIMATEData Content

  8. Langzeitarchivierung großer Datenmengen Satelliten, numerische Modelle, moderne Messmethoden Archivierung in thematisch verwandten Archiven Nationale Kooperation: WDC Verbund Erdsystemforschung Bekanntgabe von Datensätzen im Forschungsumfeld Primärdaten nur im engeren Fachbereich bekannt Suchbarkeit zusammen mit Literatur ( Informationssysteme) Primärdatenpublikation mit STD-DOI (DFG Projekt) Probleme

  9. WDC Verbund Erdsystemforschung • Wurde am 25.04.03 von den 3 deutschen ICSU WDC's in Oberpfaffenhofen gegründet, erweitert 28.01.04 in Hamburg • WDC for Climate: M&D / DKRZ, Hamburghttp://www.mad.zmaw.de/wdcc/ • WDC MARE (Marine Environmental Sciences): Marum, Bremen und Bremerhavenhttp://www.wdc-mare.org/ • WDC RSAT (Remote Sensing for the Atmosphere): DFD/DLR, Oberpfaffenhofenhttp://wdc.dlr.de/ • WDC Dynamics of the Lithosphere i.G., GFZ, Potsdam • http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/ • Verpflichtung: • Langzeit-Datenarchivierung und freier, unbeschränkter Datenzugang für alle Wissenschaftler

  10. Konzept: Primärdaten-DOI in Verantwortung der Wissenschaften erlaubt Zugangsregelungen ohne kommerziellen Hintergrund und Urheberrecht bleibt bei Datenproduzenten Aufbau: DOI Metadaten-Kern wird erweitert um bibliographische Angaben (Datenart, Autor, Publikationsdatum) Vergabe eines Primärdaten-DOI soll als Datenpublikation gewertet werden Datensatz ist als eigenständige Einheit zitierfähig "Autor, Veröffentlichungsjahr: Datensatz-Name, Primärdaten-DOI" DOI-System ersetzt kein fachspezifisches Datenmodell, Daten nur suchbar nach Datenart, Titel und Autor DFG-Projekt "Primärdatenpublikation" (www.std-doi.de):Eintrag in TIB-Katalog, Kooperation mit ZIM + DDB (URN) Primärdaten-Publikation

  12. Zugriff auf WDC Climate

  13. Benefits: Easy access to HPC environment for multi-model multi-site ensemble calculations Complete workflow including start and monitoring model calculations, data management and long-term archiving within the WDC Climate and the DKRZ archive (for local runs) Integration of data processing and low-end graphics into workflow Earth System Modelling Framework

  15. Streamlining and integration of component modelsincluding stand-alone models Development and maintenance of coupling and run environment Maintenance of scripting environment Scientific data management and WDC Climate Integration and maintenance of existing data processing and low-end graphics Community access model integrations User Support Developementwithin the present scope of M&D

  16. Multi-site implementation of modelling environment Graphical user interface to modelling environment Data assimilation: data import for model forcing and boundary conditions Implementation of Grid technology with respect to European data Grids and later with respect to modelling Grids Scientifc application: Data assimilation and short-range climate forecast European and North-Atlantic extreme eventsExample: "The Storm" and ERA40 Developementoutside the present scope of M&D

  19. M&D restructuring: Existing fields of activity should be focused on Earth system modelling framework Replacement of M&D positions according to new structure "Direct model support" should move into "model integration" User support only within the modelling framework Individual user support should be replaced by web-based support as far as possible Projects and cooperations with respect to new strategy and development tasks PRISM / ENES (EU) DEKLIM (BMBF) Primädatenpublikation (DFG) WDC Verbund Erdsystemforschung + cooperation with BADC PRISM successor D-Grid (BMBF) IWF Wissen und Medien, Göttingen: Medien aus der Wissenschaft .... für Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit Cooperation with CERFACS, ECMWF, DWD, MPI-M, Uni HH, ... for data assimilation and climate forecast ( new scientific projects) Tasks to achieve goals
