  3. How many times do you use water? What for? Imagine if you had no water, what problems would this cause? How do people in England feel when the sun comes out? How does the sun make you feel? What other weather can affect you? How?

  4. Look at the title of the poem: Blessing What connotations does this word have? What do you think of when you see the word ‘blessing’. Do you think that the poem will be positive or negative?

  5. Where is the poem set? List all the things that tell us about the place that the poem is set in.

  6. Which words show poverty in the poem?

  7. Which words or phrases are used to describe the water? Which words make us feel that water is valuble?

  8. List examples of onomatopoeia and other descriptive language in stanza 2 which describes the shortage of water.

  9. Which words are used to describe the water pipe bursting? Are they more forceful?

  10. How do the adults respond to the burst pipe? How do the children respond to the burst pipe?

  11. Can you see any religious imagery? What effect does this have? Why has the poet used this?

  14. Using your notes, annotate your version of the poem in your anthology.

  15. Imagine you are one of the characters in the poem. Write a monologue describing how you feel and how you react to the burst pipe. Base it on at least one line of the text. Success criteria: Your monologue should last at least 2 minutes You should discuss how you feel and what you can see. You should talk about how you feel before, during and after the burst pipe. Remember this is for your GCSE!!
