  2. Infertility in India Infertility affecting 10-15% of married couples in India. • About 27.5 million couples in their reproductive age are infertile. Etiology of infertility: – Female: 40-50% – Male: 30-40% • • Only 1% of infertile couples seek treatment for infertility in India (2.7M) • Currently in India no. of IVF cycles performed-~100,000 (2015 data) • 75% of total cycles are performed in organised IVF clinics and 25% of • total cycles are performed in unorganised IVF centres

Reasons: High Prevalence of Infertility • Lifestyle Factors: – Increasing Marital Age – Increasing number of working women – Rising alcohol and tobacco consumption – Rising levels of obesity • Clinical Factors: – High prevalence of Medical conditions like PCOS, Endometrial TB, Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) – Poor Ovarian Reserves – Low Sperm Count

Reasons: Low Penetration of Fertility Treatment • Affordability – Low average household income – Fertility treatment not covered in medical insurance • Access – Poor access to human infrastructure (IVF Specialist) & Physical Infrastructure (diagnostic and treatment facilities) • Awareness – Low awareness about infertility and its management amongst Indian population • Assurance – Lack of regulatory framework for quality management of IVF centres and safety of patients
