Supporting Your College & Career Goals • College & Career Center Specialist: Amy Bencomo • Available for 1:1 meetings • Study Hall support in the Library on Tuesdays & Thursdays for Seniors & Juniors for college application help • Ambassador Program - students apply their sophomore year • College representative visits during Study Hall and lunch • Assistance with college applications, essays, and scholarships • Career Spotlights throughout the year • Workshops throughout the year • Current Job & Volunteer Postings • Summer Internship information (colleges love students who work!)

Supporting Your College & Career Goals • Naviance Family Connection online • Services for students include: • College application management tool • College search • Scholarship search • Career Clusters with Education Pathways • Career & Major search • Self-awareness – Personality types • Sign up for college representative visits Please email your student's Guidance Counselor to get your access code to register for your parent Naviance account

Student Support Teacher(s) • Loopmail, email or call • Arrange a meeting with the teacher Guidance • After meeting with the teacher(s), if still have concerns, contact your student’s Guidance Counselor Student Help during Study Hall • Every day except collaboration days • 11:40 – 12:10 School Loop • Look up assignments and due dates • Check grades • Get valuable news • Loopmail your teachers and Guidance Counselor Students get help at the Homework Center located in the Library • Monday - Thursday, 2:45-4:00 • Monday: Ms. Deauville (Math) and Ms. Adler (LOTE) • Tuesday: Mr. Eilerts (History) • Wednesday: Mr. Collier (Science) • Thursday: Ms. Shoenhair (Math)

  7. MESA When: Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30pm Where: Room 65 Peer tutors are available to assist students needing help with their math and science courses. Math Peer Tutors When: Study hall, lunch, or after school Where: Library Students needing assistance in math can obtain a list of the math peer tutors and their contact info from their Guidance Counselor. Students will be expected to contact the peer tutor(s) and schedule a time to meet for tutoring in the library. Additional Academic Supports

  9. Social and Emotional Supports CASSY Counselor (Counseling and Support Services for Youth) is a non profit agency dedicated to providing mental health services to youth in the Bay Area. CASSY provides individual and group counseling on-campus during school hours and crisis support and treatment. Our CASSY Counselor is available Mondays-Fridays. Referral Process: CASSY referrals begin with your Guidance Counselor. See your Guidance Counselor if you would like to set up a referral to have your student meet with the CASSY Counselor.

Calendar Overview • August 20 & 21: Freshman Class Visits • Guidance Counselors visited PE classes and presented with Assistant Principals • September 9: Freshman Parent Night at 6:30pm, Room 30 • Sept 20/23: End of first grading period • Sept 18: CUHSD College Fair at Del Mar HS 6-8pm • Oct 25/28: End of second grading period • Dec 20: End of first semester. Final Exams Dec 18, 19 & 20

  11. Freshman taking PE will take a health unit during their PE class, sometime in spring 2020 • There will be 3 info sessions where you can learn more about the curriculum, 6:30-8:00pm • Del Mar HS: 10/17 • Branham HS: 12/10 • Westmont HS: 1/21 Sexual Health Curriculum Info Sessions for Parents

  12. Graduation Requirements 1)Must pass 220 credits 2)Pass Subjects Required

Important Academic Facts • Each semester, a passed class earns 5 credits; for the year, a class earns 10 credits • A minimum of a D is required to earn credits towards graduation; colleges require a minimum of a C. • Failed classes earn no credits, but are calculated in the GPA as a zero and remain on the transcript

  14. Progress Reports • Schoolloop & mailed home (6 weeks & 12 weeks) • Grades measure academic performance • Used for sports eligibility and extracurriculars • Only semester grades appear on the transcript and credits go towards graduation requirement • Permanent record of high school academic performance

  15. Attendance • Truants, unexcused absences, & tardies will impact a student's ability to succeed in high school • Being in class = success • Absences must be cleared within 3 days. • Parents/guardians must call the 24-hour Attendance Hotline at 558-3068 to clear an absence

  17. Minimum UC/CSU "A-G" Requirements Must earn C or better

  18. Academic Importance • A "D" or "F" earned in an UC/CSU "A-G" subject requirement may need to be repeated to apply for 4-year university → Validation • Credits earned outside of Prospect are entered on the Prospect transcript if needed to graduate (e.g. community college class or online class) If interested in pursuing outside credit recovery or validation options, please consult with your Guidance Counselor prior to signing up

  19. College Entrance Tests • PSAT = practice SAT • ACT Composite Total = 36 • English, Math, Reading, and Science + Optional Essay • SAT Reasoning Composite Total = 1600 • Reading, Writing and Language, & Math + Optional Essay • SAT Subject Test • No longer required by UC or CSU • May be recommended or required for certain private colleges or majors

  20. College Admissions Test Requirements • ACT -www.actstudent.org • SAT and SAT Subject Test - www.collegeboard.org Tests are typically taken during the spring semester of junior year and/or fall semester of senior year

  21. Extracurricular Activities • College applications • Community service based scholarships • Meaningful activities • Prolonged commitment • Leadership roles • Initiative in service • Keep track of community service hours, duties, and dates (NOT a graduation requirement)

  22. Student Steps to Success! • Do your homework (start the same day it's assigned) • Choose friends wisely • Participate in activities outside of the classroom • Find a quiet place to study • Use a daily planner and check Schoolloop daily for updates on assignments and grades • Use Study Hall to get help from your teachers • Be respectful • Practice time management skills and avoid procrastination • Have a growth mindset • Balance academics and personal life
