  3. LithuaniaTrakai PHYSICAL AND AESTHETIC FEATURES Trakai cityislocatedinthewestpartof Vilnius betweenthehills, forestsandlakes. There are 200 lakes in theregion. Thedeepest lake is Galvė, whichhas 21 islands. TYPE OF SITE Historical, archelogical, cultural AREA COVERED HISTORICAL/SCIENTIFIC/ARTISTIC INFORMATION 497.1 square kilometres.  This town is famous for its picturesque landscape and the legendary Trakai Castle. Trakai is also known for the Karaimes (a people speaking the Turkic language), who have lived there since the 14th century and have preserved their traditions. DATING Started developing in the 13th century. First mentioned in 1337.

  4. LithuaniaTrakai Island Castle Construction of the Trakai Island Castle on one of the larger islands of Galvė Lake began in the second half of the 14th century. Trakai was one of the main centers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance.

  5. LithuaniaTrakai Island Castle VISITING TIMECastle is opened March-October from 10 am to 6 pm. May - September from 10 am to 7 pm. November - February from 10 am to 5 pm. It takes about 2 hours to visit the whole castle. CONDITION OF PRESERVATION In 1961 the castlewasreconstructed. Sincethen, both permanent and temporary exhibitions are now open to the visitors. LEGAL OWNERSHIP In 1962, the Island Castle was conveyed to Trakai History Museum. TICKETS AND BOOKING Tickets are available at the booking office.For adults it’s 7 Euros and for students and seniors it’s 3,50 Euros. Till June 30th disciples can visit for free.

LithuaniaTrakai Island Castle ACCESSIBILITY You can reach the castle by car, train or buss (busses from Vilnius drive around 50 times per day to Trakai at intervals of approximately 10 to 20 minutes) FACILITIES There is Castle View guest house, AG apartament, Guest house Markizas, bike drop/rental spots, boat rental services, Karaite etnographic museum, gift shop Alter Native, restaurant Senoji Kibininė, Turkish restaurant (kebabinė), restaurant Kibinų Šalis, restaurant BONA lounge, Trakai Island and Peninsula Castles reserve, Trakai tourist information center near the castle.

PHYSICAL AND AESTHETIC FEATURES Around the palace there are two regular parterres with flowers, paths, marble sculptures, busts and vaseswhich were designed by E. F. André. AREA COVERED The Užutrakis estate covers more than 600 hectares, of which 80 hectares is surrounded by farmsteads. HISTORICAL/SCIENTIFIC/ARTISTIC INFORMATION During World War Two German troops ran the estate an after the war the manor was home to a high-ranking KGB officers’ sanatorium and later it was a rest home and a young pioneers’ camp. DATING Užutrakis is mentioned in written sources in IV century and it was called Algirdas Island

  9. LITHUANIA Užutrakio manor CONDITION OF PRESERVATION These days Užutrakio manor is used for various events and is very popular stop for tourists. Visiting time May - September: I - II: does not work III - VII: 11.00 AM - 7.00 PM On national holidays the exhibitions are closed. LEGAL OWNERSHIP Managed by the Trakai Historical National Park Directorate TICKETS AND BOOKING Ticket - 3 EurPrivileges:50 per cent discount for: pupils, students, members of ISIC, seniors, one person accompanying a disabled person.
