USING A MOBILE PHONE AT THE WHEEL Studies show that using a mobile phone while driving leads to: • Drifting across lanes • Inconsistent speed • Increased mental workload • Missed traffic signals • Reduced situation awareness • Shorter following distances • Longer reaction times • Reduced functional visual field of the driver • Drivers misjudging the size of gaps in traffic • Drivers looking straight ahead and not scanning around

MANAGING DRIVER DISTRACTION What can you do to manage driver distraction? • Ensure the vehicle has clean and unobstructed windscreens and mirrors • Adjust all vehicle controls (including the radio/CD player) before setting off • Ensure pets are properly restrained • Turn off your mobile phone and MP3 player while driving • If you are unfamiliar with the route, check the map before you start driving or have a passenger navigate for you

What can you do to manage driver distraction? • Ask passengers to be quiet if you are having trouble concentrating while driving. • Take a break rather than eat, drink, smoke or groom while driving.
