  1. Potential Energy: Energy that is stored or held in readiness. Kinetic Energy: Energy of motion (movement) Energy: The ability to do work or cause change.

  2. Two Types of Energy • Study these two pictures. Each picture shows examples of two states of • energy. • Name the two states of energy. • Point out where each type of energy is represented in the diagrams.

  3. Mechanical- motion or position of an object. This type of energy can occur as kinetic and potential energy. Thermal- the measure of energy particles in an object. This type of energy can occur as kinetic and potential energy Chemical- Holds chemical bonds and compounds together stored as potential energy. Example: chocolate, wood, wax, cells in your body. Electrical Energy- moving electrical charges. Example: electricity, electrical energy from batteries Electromagnetic- Radiant energy like the light you see everyday or from the sun. Example: microwaves, radiation, UV rays Nuclear Energy- Potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. Fission is when the atom splits. Fusion is when nuclei join together to produce electricity. Nuclear power plants use fission reactions to produce electricity. Nuclear fusion occurs in the sun and other stars. 6 different forms of energy

  4. What type of Energy is Shown? Sound

  10. Energy Conversion: A change from on form of energy to another Transforms: electrical to thermal Transforms: electrical to mechanical Toaster Electrical Car Engine

  11. Energy Conversion: A change from on form of energy to another Chemical energy is converted to electrical energy when you think • Your body converts the chemical energy from the food you eat to mechanical energy you need to move your muscles. • Chemical energy in food is also converted to the thermal energy your body uses to maintain its temperature.

  12. Energy Conversion: A change from on form of energy to another Strike a match and the MECHANICAL ENERGY used to move the match is converted to THERMAL ENERGY. The THERMAL ENERGY causes the match to release stored CHEMICAL ENERGY which is converted to THERMAL ENERGY and to the energy you see as light.
