  1. Non-Formal Education

  2. OverarchingGoal: The learners will have literacy and life skills. Big Idea: By attending the classes, learners will be able to help in the community, to empower themselves and improve their quality of life, through an appreciation of their heritage and their culture. Topic:Health and Literacy

  3. Health and Literacy Essential question: How can we link Health with Literacy?

  4. We want ourlearners to know:How to read and write in order to be able to inform themselves about traditional and current health practices.

  5. We want our learner to understand:-The meaning and value behind the written word-That they already have extensive knowledge about health from traditional sources-That being literate will help them work with the modern health system

  6. We want our learners to:Create a local health dictionary of natural remedies, bioindicators etc.Use the vocabulary that comes out from the project to learn reading and writing.

  7. Project: Dictionary of Local Health Remedies and Bioindicators Strategies 1.Collect information on health practices from the learners. 2. Create a map of knowledgeable people in the community who have this information

  8. Detailed Lesson Plan:-Share experiences using natural remedies for illness and wellbeing. Share local wisdom using bioindicators (such as when the peach trees bloom, it’s time plant)-Write words on board in Dzongkha. Learners choose 1 to 5 words to learn to read and write using active learning strategies at each session. -Teach letters using gesture, writing in the air, writing on the board and then in notebook.

  9. -Collect and compile the information. Teach alphabetical order. -Assess class for special talents (artistic, verbal, movement etc) -Give students an opportunity to illustrate various parts of the dictionary. -Discuss the cost of printing versus selling. Basic maths and economics. -ASSESSMENT: Possibly print and sell the dictionary to public

  10. Other strategies -Spending time observing the natural environment. -Write words on paper. Play music. When music stops then they have to read the word. Songs and rhymes with actions -Role play -Use storytelling, narrate three times, mix up the text and have them rearrange.
