  2. What is communication? • Communication is anart of transmitting information, ideas and attitude from one person to another. Communication is the process of meaningful interaction among Human Beings. • The best idea, or suggestions, or plans cannot take form without communications • Communication can take many forms: • Oral vs. written • Verbal vs. non-verbal • Interpersonal vs. organizational

  3. What is interpersonal communication? • Do you picture the engineer as the nerd in the corner with the pocket protector? • Those days have passed. • Engineering today means teamwork. • The Thomas Edison mythology would not work on problems like the Manhattan Project

  4. Interpersonal communication • Communication is divided into five levels depending on the nature, scope and depth of interaction. These are as follows: • Passing Communication • Factual Communication • Thoughts and Ideas • Feelings • Peak Communication

  5. Engineering Communication • Engineers need to be able to communicate thoughts, ideas, and plans to many other specialists in many different fields. • Engineers work in teams with people from different backgrounds. • Therefore, it is necessary to have a variety of communication skills.

  6. Elements of Human Communication ... • Initiation • Feedback • Channel • Situation • Purpose

  7. Attitude • Knowledge • Expression • Language • intellectualism

  8. Creativity in communication • One’s ability to break out of stereotyped reactions, to see beyond the set and accepted patterns.

  9. Empathy in communication • Empathy is the quality that allows one to understand the mental and psychological status of the person. • Listening with a view to understand.

  10. Language Skills • Speaking • Listening • Reading • writing

  11. Next Class Presentation Topic • Why engineers have to have strong command over communication and interpersonal skills? How the communication can help in their professional lives? How the interpersonal and communication skills make difference in their work environment? • Prepare a 5 minutes presentation.
