Firms downsize as a response to organizational bankruptcy or recession • It has occurred on both private and public sectors • Statistics: • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that more than 4.3 million jobs were cut between 1985-1989. • The New York Times states that more than 43 million jobs had been eliminated between 1979-1996.
