  9. The Christian Life is Joyful! • The most powerful example of our faith is how we respond in suffering. (2 Cor 12:10)

  10. The Christian Life is Joyful! • (2 Corinthians 12:10 NKJV) - Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

  30. Men who Overcame Depression • {4} But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!” {5} Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.”

  31. Men who Overcame Depression • {7} And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” {8} So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.

  34. Men who Overcame Depression • (Psalms 142:1-4 - I cry out to the LORD with my voice; With my voice to the LORD I make my supplication. {2} I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare before Him my trouble. {3} When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, Then You knew my path. In the way in which I walk They have secretly set a snare for me. {4} Look on my right hand and see, For there is no one who acknowledges me; Refuge has failed me; No one cares for my soul.

  35. Men who Overcame Depression • Both these men were able by faith to overcome.

  36. Sources of Depression • Buried anger. A passive escape! (Eph 4:26-27; 1 John 3:15)

  40. Sources of Depression • Often the most angry people I know are the most passive ones. • By burying and dwelling on hurts we only make them bigger. We may make them permanent.

  41. Sources of Depression • It is never better to run from problems. God has commanded what we should do. (Matt 5:23-24; 18:15-17)

  43. Sources of Depression • Philippians 3:12-14 - Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. {13} Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, {14} I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  44. Sources of Depression • Selfishness. (Phil 2:3-4)

  45. Sources of Depression • (Philippians 2:3-4 NKJV)Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. {4} Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

  46. Sources of Depression • An overemphasis on the here and now. (1 Tim 6:6-10; 17-18)

  47. Sources of Depression • (1 Timothy 6:6-10 NKJV) Now godliness with contentment is great gain. {7} For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. {8} And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. {9} But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.

  48. Sources of Depression • {10} For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

  49. Sources of Depression • (1 Timothy 6:17-18 NKJV) Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. {18} Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share,

  50. Sources of Depression • A poor family upbringing. (Eph 6:4)
