  2. SKOS • Simple Knowledge Organization System • “Provides a model for expressing the basic structure and content of concept schemes such as thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading lists, taxonomies, folksonomies, and other similar types of controlled vocabulary”—SKOS Primer

  3. SKOS • Based on the Resource Description Framework (RDF) • Resources can be exchanged between software applications and published on the Web • Interconnects data on the Web, helping create the Semantic Web

  4. Authorities and Vocabularies • URL: id.loc.gov • Replaces lcsh.info • Intent: To provide human and programmatic access to commonly found standards and vocabularies developed by LC

  5. Authorities and Vocabularies • LCSH is the first offering • Subject headings • Genre/form headings • Children’s subject headings • Subdivision records • Validation records • Provides links from LCSH headings to RAMEAU headings

  6. Authorities and vocabularies • To come: • Thesaurus for Graphic Materials (TGM) • MARC geographic area codes • MARC language codes • MARC relator codes

  7. Authorities and Vocabularies • Benefits • Servers can download entire controlled vocabularies and the values within them, in multiple formats • Available at no cost

Authorities and Vocabularies • Current search parameters • Headings containing words comprising three characters or less are not searchable • Searching is “keyword in heading” • UFs must be searched with the “Known Label Retrieval” method, e.g. id.loc.gov/authorities/label/Cinema • Retain spaces and punctuation • Do not truncate

  11. Authorities and Vocabularies • Current display parameters • Terms labeled as BTs may be facets instead World War, 1939-1945—Personal narratives BT World War, 1939-1945 • Terms with more than 20 semantic relationships cannot be visualized
