  2. TIME and PLACE SETTING In our chapters it is October 1872 and they are on the Rangoon heading to Hong Kong

  3. Chapter 16 Summary In chapter 16, Phileas Fogg, Passepartout, Aouda, and Detective Fix are all aboard the Rangoon, a boat. They were at the end of their ten to twelve day voyage, yet Fix had not yet made an appearance to his fellow travelers. Before deciding to speak to Passepartout, Fix had lots of time to think about what his next steps would be. Fix needed to make an arrestment at Hong Kong (their destination) or the robber could escape. Fix needed more information on Phileas Foggand decides to approach Passepartout for information. Not getting anything no already to his knowledge, Passepartout and Fix settle for a glass of gin.

  4. Chapter 17 Summary Passepartout and Fix continued to meet on the deck of the Rangoon while Phileas Fogg hung around Aouda or played whist. Passepartout kept trying to figure out Fix’s purpose. It says in the chapter, “He never could have imagined that Phileas Fogg was being tracked as a robber around the globe.” Then, he figures that Fix is sent to be sure Fogg keeps his word and travels all the way around the world. Also, we find, near the end of the chapter, that Fix is aiming to arrest Fogg of the robbery. Fix thinks through the possibilities of what Passepartout may know about his master’s, Phileas Fogg’s, actions.

Important Things Characters Say, Do, or Think Chapter 16 Chapter 17 • Detective Fix thinks over all possibilities of how to arrest “his man”. • Fix talks to Passapartout to get information about Passepartout, Phileas Fogg, and Aouda. • Passepartout says, "It's clear!”…"He's a spy sent to keep us in view! That isn't quite the thing, either, to be spying Mr. Fogg, who is so honorable a man! Ah, gentlemen of the Reform, this shall cost you dear!” • Passepartout can not hold his tongue and questions Fix on his future doings. • Fix states that he doesn't believe a word of this journey around the world.

  12. Questions Throughout the Chapter Why does Aouda owe Phileas Fogg her life? Why is Fix following/spying on them? Who is Fix going to arrest? Is Fogg the thief? Fix thinks Fogg and Aouda eloped (ran away to secretly get married)? Has Fogg gotten out of something already by paying money? Has Fogg already been arrested? Did he pay his bail? If so, is that how he used money to get out of something in the past? How does Fix already know about these events?
