  1. MISSED APPROACH SEGMENT REFRESHER

  2. AIM Review missed approach criteria and missed approach variations

  3. MISSED APPROACH SEGMENT • ALIGNMENT • AREA • OBSTACLE CLEARANCE

  4. MISSED APPROACH OPTIONS • Straight Ahead • Turning • Combination Straight and Turning

  5. AREA • Normally 15nm long • Width at start of area is the same as the final it joins • Width at end of area is 4nm of primary and 2nm of secondary area on each side of the course • In a turning missed approach the area is affected by three variables • width of the final at the missed approach point • aircraft approach categories • number of degrees in the turn • Must have positive course guidance to have secondary areas • Precision approach has 2 sections in missed approach

  13. PENETRATING OBSTACLE OPTIONS What do you think we can do about penetrating obstacles? • Get rid of them. Cut them down or dismantle if possible. • Change the radial we are flying out so they are not in the missed approach area. • Publish a climb gradient which will ensure the aircraft will miss the obstacles. • Publish a higher MDA so that the aircraft will begin the missed approach higher.
