Hawaii Expedition

Join us for an exciting expedition to Hawaii from July 20 to August 5, 2014, focusing on unique nature, conservation, and geosciences. This meeting will cover potential activities including volcano exploration, SCUBA diving, stargazing, and service projects like beach clean-ups. With accreditation from the DofE Gold Award scheme, participants will engage in valuable experiences while meeting DoE requirements. The programme includes training camps, acclimatization walks, and a draft itinerary for the adventure ahead. Stay tuned for more updates!

  2. Why Hawaii? • ‘World class’ sites for … • Nature & Conservation • Astronomy • Volcanoes • Scenic Variety • Opportunities for DoE Gold Exploration • Possible EPQ opportunities on volcanoes and managing hazards.

  3. D of E GOLD AWARD • The DoE scheme exists to reward and encourage activities which are valuable in themselves. • We have organised the programme to ensure it meets DoE requirements, for a DoE Gold Expedition. • It will be authorised and accredited by the scheme. • Approved by CCF & School

  5. What & When? • 2 weeks on Big Island • provisionally 20thJuly – 5th August 2014 • 10 days around volcano Park , DoE Exploration • 4/5 days for other activities: ‘Phase 2’ activities: SCUBA, horse riding, stargazing, snorkelling, kayaking, sports. • Relaxation (beach / boat / etc.)! • Likely extra: Pearl Harbour & Alcatraz visits

  6. Species endemic (unique) to Hawaii. Plant species which have invaded Hawaii. Structure of Hawaiian tropical rainforest. Effect of vog (sulphur dioxide gas) on plant species. Re-colonisation of lava following eruptions. Adaptation of species to volcanic activity e.g. how some trees can survive lava flows. Possible Study Topics: Biology

  7. Nature of volcanic ejecta. Different types of lava (aa and pahoehoe) Volcanic landforms on Hawaii. Micro-climates on the volcano. Sulphur Dioxide monitoring. Extent of lava flows in the area. Tourism and volcanic activity. Hazard land use zonation. Possible Study Topics: Geography

  8. CREATIVITY • Planning your expeditions before you leave the UK. • Planning menus when on your expedition. • Producing your presentation after the expedition. • Helping plan fundraising events. • Developing link’s with pupils at Mid-Pacific Institute

  9. ACTION • Training Camp Lakes 19th – 22nd October 13 • The practise expedition in Scotland ??. (8th – 12th April 14) • The acclimatisation walks in Hawaii. • The actual expedition. • Recreational sporting activities in Hawaii e.g. diving, horse-riding, snorkelling.

  10. SERVICE • Fund-raising activities. • Conservation activities on Big Island e.g. removing alien ginger plants from rainforest. • Working with students at Mid-Pacific Institute to clean-up beaches.

  11. Draft Programme • Manchester – Heathrow - LA overnight • LA Kona (Big Island) – Kilauea Military Camp (KMC). • Orientation visit to Volcano National Park, see Lava flow at sunset. KMC. • Preparation day. • Practice day, Final inspections, safety briefs • Expedition starts + camp • Expedition day 2 + camp • Expedition day 3 + camp • Expedition ends return to base (showers, shop etc!) DAY NUMBER NB: All details are provisional at this stage

  13. A full Risk Assessment will be published to all members. Major risks are ‘bumps, sprains & bruises’ + sunburn. Minor risks of altitude effects, and some activity-specific risks (e.g. horse-riding). USA-standard of medical/rescue provision Insurance- Travel & medical Leadership team anticipated to include: Mountain First Aid x3 Mountain Leadership x4 Medical doctor Experienced Expedition Leaders x4 DoE assessors x 2 Pupils still responsible for staying safe, by following instructions, acting responsibly, and working as buddy pairs.
