ORIGINS • FIFA formed as early as May 21, 1904 in Paris, but no national competition except for Olympics • As the highest football authority, FIFA made its claim as the organizers of the competition • 1920’s – French football administrators, including Jules Rimet, are credited with bringing together the world’s strongest national teams to compete for a world championship of football. • Decided that 1930 would be the first international competition for the what was being called the “World Cup” and “La Coupe de Monde”

ORIGINS • Much debate as to who would host first World Cup • FIFA felt it necessary for the first host nation to pay for travel expenses of all referees and national teams • a clearly expensive proposition • but many European and South American football powerhouses showed interest: Italy, Spain, Holland, Hungary, Sweden and Uruguay

  4. URUGUAY 1930 • Uruguay - First Host of World Cup • 13 original teams invited • 4 European teams, 8 South American teams and a United States representative • Originally only 1 European team had signed up, but the efforts of Rimet helped move three more nations to the competition

  5. Jules Rimet Cup French sculptor, Albert Lafleur, designed the first trophy to be presented to the FIFA World Champions.

  6. The Golden Boot The Golden Boot Award was introduced at the 1930 FIFA World Cup. This prestigious award, is Given to the World Cup's top scorer, and is earned by scoring the most goals in the finals tournament.

  7. FIFA World Cup 1930 The first FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay. The Jules Rimet Cup was presented to the first FIFA World Cup winners, Uruguay. Golden Boot - Guillermo Stabile, Argentina (8 goals) Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2

  8. FIFA World Cup 1934 The 1934 FIFA World Cup was held in Italy. Thirty-two nations entered the competition, and after qualification, 16 teams participated in the final tournament. Golden Boot - OldrichNejedly, Czechoslovakia (5 goals) Italy beat Czechoslovakia 2–1 in the final.

FRANCE 1938 • France chosen as third host • Many nations kept away from competition due to consequences of upcoming World War; examples include Spain, Austria, Argentina and once again Uruguay • For the first time the host nation was automatic qualifier, a privilege that has carried on up to present World Cup play

  10. FIFA World Cup 1938 The Competition was held in France and Italy retained the Jules Rimet Cup. Golden Boot - Leonidasda Silva, Brazil (7 goals) Italy beat Hungary 4–2 in the final.

  11. Brazil 1950 • Throughout the Second World War the Italian Vice-President of FIFA, Dr. Ottorino Barassi, hid the FIFA World Cup trophy in a shoe-box under his bed and thus saved it from falling into the hands of occupying troops. It was back in 1950 and hosted by Brazil.

The planet’s biggest stadium • Football in Brazil had become so popular that it was decided to build a brand new stadium with a capacity of 220,000 in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro to host this world cup. • Host Brazil qualified with three other teams, Spain, Uruguay and Sweden, not for the semi-finals, but for a final series of matches in round robin format, in which England and Italy were surprising absentees.

  13. FIFA World Cup 1950 The 1950 FIFA World Cup was held in Brazil and was won by Uruguay. To mark the 25th anniversary Of Jules Rimet's presidency of FIFA, the trophy was referred to as the Jules Rimet Cup. Golden Boot – Ademir Marques de Menezes, Brazil (9 goals) Uruguay beat the hosts Brazil 2–1

  14. FIFA World Cup 1954 The 1954 FIFA World Cup was held in Switzerland and won by West Germany. Golden Boot - SandorKocsis, Hungary (11 goals) The tournament set a number of all-time records for goal scoring, including the highest average goals scored per game. West Germany defeated Hungary 3–2 in the final

Beginning of an Era • This world cup was the first time in history in which we could distinguish who a player was by the number he wore on his back. • With the formation of the AFC in 1954 the event became truly global because now several teams from Asia and Africa were now included. • This allowed for the qualifying rounds to feature a higher number of nations than ever before.

SWEDEN 1958 • First World Cup to be televised for the world to view the brilliance of the best players in the game • 55 Countries took part and the likes of Switzerland, Belgium, Uruguay, Spain and most notably Italy failed to qualify; many new nations emerged including the likes of Wales, N. Ireland and USSR

  17. FIFA World Cup 1958 The sixth World Cup, was hosted by Sweden and won by Brazil. Golden Boot – Just Fontaine, France (13 goals) Brazil beat Sweden 5–2 in the final

  18. A Star is Born: Pele Hits the World Stage • 17 year-old Brazilian youngster Pele was a huge factor in Brazil’s victory over Sweden and scored 6 goals in the overall tournament en route to Brazil’s first World Championship of Football

  19. Chile 1962 • This World Cup is remembered because this is the occasion in which futbol became more physical.

  20. More teams…more upsets • A new record 56 teams took part in the qualifying rounds. • This new format caused many of the powerhouse teams to be eliminated before the tournament.

  21. FIFA World Cup 1962 The 1962 FIFA World Cup was held in Chile. Golden Boot - Vava, Brazil / Garrincha, Brazil / Leonel Sanchez, Chile / DrazanJerkovic, Yugoslavia / ValentinIvanov, Soviet Union / Florian Albert, Hungary (4 goals) The average goals per match dropped to 2.78, under 3 for the first time in the history of the competition. Brazil claimed their second World Cup title by defeating Czechoslovakia 3–1 in the final.

  22. ENGLAND 1966 • New record 70 nations competing • Controversy over African regional champ having to play against Asia or Oceania zone to qualify • Many African nations dropped out before qualifying rounds • Qualifying: 10 teams from Europe, 4 from South America, 1 each from Asia, North America and Central America

  23. New Nations Emerge, Old Fall • Powerhouse Brazil failed to pass the first round as phenom Pele was victim of physical play • Portugal (Eusebio pictured bottom), N. Korea and host England were impressive in early rounds

  24. FIFA World Cup 1966 The 1966 FIFA World Cup was held in England. Golden Boot - Eusebioda Silva Ferreira, Portugal (9 goals) This is the first FIFA World Cup to have a mascot associated with it. England beat West Germany 4–2 in the final

  25. Mexico 1970 • World Cup became a television spectacle. • This was the first year substitutes were allowed. • Also, yellow and red cards were introduced at this time.

  26. Participating nations up to 75 • Many well respected teams such as Hungary, Portugal, France, Spain , and Argentina did not qualify, while less heralded teams like Morroco and Israel made their debut.

  27. FIFA World Cup 1970 The 1970 FIFA World Cup was held in Mexico. Brazil were allowed to keep the Jules Rimet Cup. Golden Boot – Gerd Muller, West Germany (10 goals) The tournament was won by Brazil by defeating, Italy 4–1 in the final

  28. FIFA World Cup The new FIFA World Cup Trophy was created by the Italian sculptor, Silvio Gazzaniga for the 1974 Tournament. Made from 18 carat gold with a malachite base, the trophy is 36.5 cm high, weighs 11lbs (6.1 kilograms ) and belongs to FIFA. A replica is presented to the Winners.

  29. FIFA World Cup 1974 The 1974 FIFA World Cup was held in West Germany. Golden Boot – Grzegorz Lato, Poland (7 goals) West Germany beat the Netherlands in the final, 2–1.

  30. Argentina 1978 • The World Cup was played in Argentina despite much controversy surrounding General Videla’s totalitarian regime and its violation of human rights.

  31. FIFA World Cup 1978 The 1978 FIFA World Cup was held in Argentina. Golden Boot – Mario Kempes, Argentina (6 goals) Argentina beat the Netherlands 3–1 after extra time in the final.

  32. Spain 1982 • Epic battles between Brazil & Italy and France vs. West Germany are two games that will be remembered in this world cup. • Spain would host 24 teams whereas in the previous years countries only saw 16 teams.

  33. Alterations to the organization of the tournament. • With 24 teams now advancing instead of 16 they had to rearrange the structure. Three phases were now in place: A first round with six groups of four where two advanced from each, a second round with four groups of three where the top team advanced, then the semi-finals and the finals.

  34. FIFA World Cup 1982 The 1982 FIFA World Cup, was held in Spain. Golden Boot - Paolo Rossi, Italy (6 goals) The tournament was won by Italy, after defeating West Germany 3–1 in the final.

  35. The Adidas Golden Shoe In 1982 the award was renamed the Adidas Golden Shoe.

  36. Mexico 1986 – Once again • Mexico was chosen as a replacement host because of financial difficulties in Colombia. • Despite terrible earthquakes as a prelude to Futbol’s main event, the games went on.

  37. Controversial or not…Maradona is one of the greatest!!! • This goal was accurately dubbed a “goal scored by the hand of God”. Maradona’s other goal against England is questionably the best goal ever.

  38. FIFA World Cup 1986 The 1986 FIFA World Cup Was held in Mexico. Golden Boot – Gary Lineker, England (6 goals) Argentina beat West Germany 3–2 in the final

  39. ITALIA 1990 • 112 Nations battled for the 14th World Cup • 10 Stadiums reconstructed and 2 newly built for the event

  40. FIFA World Cup 1990 The 1990 FIFA World Cup was held in Italy. Golden Boot – Salvatore Schillaci, Italy (6 goals) The tournament was won by West Germany, who beat Argentina 1–0 in the final

  41. United States 1994 • Much skepticism as to the USA’s response to “soccer” vs. its mainstream sports • 147 Countries Entered Qualifying, of which 24 made it to America’s stage • Record numbers of spectators, with numbers reaching over 3 million • Commercial boom of world’s most played sport

  42. Ups & Downs • United States and rest of world had household names as a result of such widespread broadcast of the tournament: Hagi, Bebeto, Romario, Milla, Tafarel were all superstars • With success also came tragedy as one of the most memorable of household names was Colombian national Andres Escobar who was shot dead at his home in Colombia after netting an own goal to eliminate Colombia from the tournament at the hands of the US

ITALIA vs. BRAZIL • With no time left on the clock, the World Cup would go to penalty kicks for the first time ever in its 64-year history • A championship lay on the shoulders and feet of stars such as Romario, Bebeto, Dino Baggio and most memorably Roberto Baggio, who sailed his penalty shot over the crossbar in an effort that greatly tarnished his great play in the tournament

  44. FIFA World Cup 1994 The 1994 FIFA World Cup was held in the United States. Brazil became the first nation to win Four World Cup titles. Golden Boot - HristoStoichkov, Bulgaria / Oleg Salenko, Russia (6 goals) Brazil beat Italy 3–2 in a penalty shootout after the game ended 0–0 after extra time, the first World Cup final to be decided on penalties.

  45. FRANCE 1998 • 32 teams, 64 matches played • 4 teams were placed in each of the eight groups, with good diversity in all but one of the groups with one American, one Asian or African and two European teams represented in each of the groups

  46. FIFA World Cup 1998 The 1998 FIFA World Cup was held in France. Golden Boot – DavorSuker, Croatia (6 goals) The tournament was won by France, who beat Brazil 3–0 in the final. held in France.

  47. FIFA World Cup 2002 The 2002 FIFA World Cup was hosted by both South Korea and Japan. Golden Boot -Ronaldo, Brazil (8 goals) Brazil won the tournament for a record fifth time, beating Germany 2–0 in the final.

  48. FIFA World Cup 2006 The 2006 FIFA World Cup was held in Germany. Golden Boot – Miraslav Klose, Germany (5 goals) Italy won defeating France 5–3 in a penalty shootout in the final, after extra time had finished in a 1–1 draw

  49. FIFA World Cup 2010 The 2010 FIFA World Cup was held in South Africa. In the final, Spain defeated the Netherlands 1–0 after extra time

  50. FIFA World Cup 2014 The 2014 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil.
