  2. Swbat understand and contrast the meanings of motif, symbolism, and theme • DO NOW: Copy down these definitions: Motifis an object or idea that repeats itself throughout a literary work. Symbolismis the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. Also, they represent something else and help clarify an idea Theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly.   3. Period 4 Below you will find your name associated with either motif, symbolism, or theme. Please come in tomorrow ready to share examples with the rest of the class. Write down the page number. Please don’t rely on Spark Notes or Cliff Notes. Do this based on your own interpretation. VOCABULARY REVIEW • SERENITY: quiet, calm, peaceful • EXOTIC: foreign, uncommon, from a distant place, unnatural • RUFFLE: to disturb the smoothness of; to upset mildly • CAPRICIOUS: unpredictable; likely to change • TRANSPARENT: clear, easily seen and understood • THEORETICAL: not based on appearance; in theory only, unproven • SYMPATHY: shared understanding or feeling • VERIFY: to prove or test the truth of • FLOURISH: to grow well; to grow strong; to grow abundantly • INCIDENTAL: occurring accidentally; by the side; of less importance • MOROSE: gloom, sullen, sad • ROTUND: round

  6. CLARIFYING MOTIF • Motifs are images, ideas, sounds or words that help to explain the central idea of a literary work i.e. theme. Moreover, a symbol may appear once or twice in a literary work, whereas a motif is a recurring element. •  Motifs contribute in developing the major theme of a literary work and help readers to comprehend the underlying messages that writers intend to communicate to them.   7. CLARIFYING THEME • Theme is an element of a story that binds together various other essential elements of a narrative. It is a truth that exhibits universality and stands true for people of all cultures. Theme gives readers better understanding of the main character’s conflicts, experiences, discoveries and emotions as they are derived from them. Through themes, a writer tries to give his readers an insight into how the world works or how he or she views human life. • It is up to the readers to explore a theme of a literary work by analyzing characters, plot and other literary devices.
