  2. Program Overview Our Job • Introduction to the employee chemical right-to-know/hazard communication written program (Lee) • Departmental-specific training program (Timm) Your job • Take a form, review presentation/links on the chemistry server, return to Dr. Timm

  3. Why have a training program? • Become familiar with the OSHA regulations • Learn about emergency response procedures • Learn the general laboratory safety guidelines • Train employees in the identification and use of safety equipment • Develop a chemical storage and waste disposal plan

  4. Emergency Response Procedures • General response • Chemical spills • Biohazard spills • Compressed gas leaks • Fires/explosions • Medical emergencies • Floods

  5. General Safety Guidelines • General rules for safety and operation • General safety equipment • Equipment for personal protection • Handling gas cylinders and cryogenic liquids • Disposal of broken glassware

  6. Chemical Storage, Part 1 • Chemical nomenclature • Chemical labeling - common labels - NFPA labels • Storage locations:- most inorganic and organics in S322- solvents in S322- acids and bases in prep room (S324)- biochemicals in S301- acetic acid/anhydride in S321

  7. Chemical Storage, Part 2 • MSDS - a listing of on-line sites at Denison - shelves outside Dr. Lammela’s office - 24 Hour Security Office (3333) • Chemical inventory - storage procedures- zip disk in the student desk (S303)- hard copies in S303 and S322 - need a student to keep updated

  8. Chemical Waste Disposal • Basic procedures • Containers • Labeling • Hazard identification (flammable, corrosive, toxic, etc.) • Disposal timeframe -- annually and is conducted through dept. faculty in conjunction with safety/security

  9. Additional Notices • Incompatible chemicals • Potential peroxide-forming chemicals • Potential shock-sensitive chemicals • Neutralization of acids and bases • Cleaning solutions for glassware

  12. The Nazareth ERP • The first plan of action is to evacuate and secure the area • Notify security at x3333 • Notify a faculty member and plan to assemble with the safety/security response team • Report all accidents

  13. If you discover water leaking or flooding and there is evidence of a secondary problem (e.g., hot electrical wires, reaction with chemicals, etc.) • Do not attempt any remedial action. Instead notify Campus Security (3333). • If you feel that no secondary problem exists, turn off the source of water if possible. If the water is intended to cool an electrically powered device or an electrically heated chemical reaction, turn off the electricity also.

  14. If the source of the water is not immediately obvious to you, call facilities Management (2340) during normal working hours (7:30 am to 4:30 pm), or Campus Security (3333) after hours or on weekends, and describe the situation to the dispatcher. Be specific as to the location and possible source of the leak. • Pickup of water: Call Campus Security for assistance • Notification of occupants of affected areas: When necessary, notify at least one of the usual occupants of the affected rooms or the Campus Security as soon as appropriate.
