  2. Causes of Imperialism • Industrialism • Caused a need for more materials • New areas were needed for economic trade • Expanding empires

Imperialism Spreads to Africa • Africa had resources that were needed for the Industrial Revolution • A growing belief that whites were superior to other races justified taking over land already inhabited by natives of darker skin • Civil wars were occurring in Africa, making it weaker and easier to conquer

Berlin Conference • Otto Von Bismarck called together major Western powers to negotiate control over Africa • 80% of Africa was under traditional and local control • Conference opened in Berlin on November 15, 1884 • Countries represented were Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden-Norway, Turkey, and the United States. • Formed rules for expanding European influence in Africa

  6. Effect of the Berlin Conference • Created rules for occupation of conquered lands • Helped prevent war over Africa • Justified the dividing the continent without taking Natives into consideration • Helped expand Imperialism • Still affects Africa to this day

Maxim gun • The world’s first automatic machine gun • Developed by Hiram Maxim in 1884 • Utilized in major armies in 1914 • Water cooled • Took 4-6 men to operate • Theoretically supposed to fire 600 rounds • Fired about ½ that in practice • Helped expansion (war advantage) • A German version, the Maschinengewehr held a 250 round fabric belt

  8. Menelik II • Emperor of Ethiopia from 1889-1913 • Created a stable empire known as the United States of Abyssinia, or Ethiopia • Constructed a railroad • Attempted to end the slave trade • Doubled the size of the country

  9. Quinine • A drug made from the bark of the South American cinchona tree • Cure for malaria and Yellow fever • Allowed people to settle in Africa without suffering from the diseases • Helped European countries expand to Africa
