  1. Workshop 9 DesignXplorer Parameter Manager

  2. Workshop 9 – Goals • Goal: • Use the • DesignXplorer Parameter Manager • Parameter Manager under Solution branch to specify changes to the load magnitude and material properties of our model and solve all scenarios at one time. August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-2

  3. Workshop 9 - Start Page • From the launcher start Simulation. • Choose “Geometry > From File . . . “ and browse to the file “Lever.x_t”. • When DS starts, close the Template menu by clicking the ‘X’ in the corner of the window. • Change the working unit system to metric mm. • “Units > Metric (mm, kg, N, C, s)” August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-3

  4. 5 Workshop 9 - Environment • Highlight the Environment branch. • Select the surface of the large horizontal cylindrical hole. • RMB > Insert > Cylindrical Support. • In the detail window change “Tangential” to “Free”. 6 8 August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-4 7

  5. 9 . . . Workshop 9 - Environment • Select the bottom face of the vertical cylinder. • RMB > Insert > Fixed Support. 10 August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-5

  6. . . . Workshop 9 - Environment • Select the surface of the smaller horizontal cylinder. • RMB > Insert > Bearing Load. • In the bearing load detail switch to the component method. • Enter a magnitude of 5000N in the Y direction. 11 13 12 14 August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-6

  7. Workshop 9 – Boundary Conditions 5000 N bolt load in Y direction Fixed Support Cylindrical SupportRadial, Axial = FixedTangential = Free August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-7

  8. Workshop 9 – Solution Setup • Highlight the solution branch. • RMB > Insert > Stress > Equivalent (von Mises). • RMB > Insert > Deformation > Total. 16 15 17 • RMB > Insert > Parameter Item > Parameter Manager. 18 August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-8

  9. Workshop 9 - Parameters • Set up parameters by toggling on ‘P’: • Enable bearing load Y component as a Parameter. • Enable Maximum Total Deformation as a Parameter. 19 20 August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-9

  10. . . . Workshop 9 - Parameters • Set up material as a parameter. • Expand the Geometry branch and highlight “Part 1”. • Switch to the “Engineering Data” tab • Click on the box beside Young’s Modulus and Density to enable them as parameters 21 August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-10

  11. . . . Workshop 9 - Parameters • Return to the Project page and choose “New DesignXplorer Parameter Manager • The chosen Input Parameters are displayed • Click Insert new “What –if” design point August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-11

  12. . . . Workshop 9 - Parameters • Add more input points to get a table similar to the one shown below: - Note : Each new scenario becomes a design point August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-12

  13. . . . Workshop 9 - Parameters • When all design points are entered, choose to “Run > Process Design Points” August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-13

  14. . . . Workshop 9 - Parameters • The result should show the output parameters in the table August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-14

  15. . . . Workshop 9 - Parameters • Click the “What-If” Charts on the right • What-If Charts allow users to configure and plot input vs. output in XY plots August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-15

  16. 35 34 . . . Workshop 9 - Parameters • …..Alternatively, the Parameter Manager can Also be used to achieve the same comparison studies. • Continuing from step 23 ( Steps 1 through 23 are the same for both methods) • Highlight the Parameter Manager branch. • In the Parameter Worksheet place the cursor in the “Scenarios” section and RMB to “Add” a new scenario (add 3 new scenarios as shown at bottom of page). August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-16

  17. . . . Workshop 9 - Parameters • Set up the Parameter Manager for Structural steel and Stainless Steel on the worksheet as shown below: • Scenario 1: As set up in problem description. • Scenario 2: • Bearing Load Y Component = 5000 N • Young’s Modulus = 190e3MPa • Density = 7.75e-6 Kg/m3 • Scenario 3: • Bearing load Component = 10000 N • Young’s Modulus = 2e5 MPa • Density = 7.85e-6 Kg/m3 • Scenario 4: • Bearing Load Y Component = 10000 N • Young’s Modulus = 190e3 MPa • Density = 7.75e-6 Kg/m3 August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-17

  18. Workshop 9 - Solution • Check the status of all scenarios and make sure each is checked • Solve. August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-18

  19. Workshop 9 – PM Notes • Drag the dividers between columns to resize them. • Can change definition names and they will update in the scenario table. • Only checked scenarios will be solved. Divider August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-19

  20. Current scenario being post-processed will be displayed in Bold type. Workshop 9 - Results • To update the results to a different scenario check the scenario then solve. August 26, 2005 Inventory #002266 WS9-20
