  3. Introduction The phylum Cnidaria, formerly called Coelenterata* , contains the hydras , sea anemones , corals and jellyfish . They are radially symmetrical* animals, with one end of the body bearing the mouth and tentacles. Some live attached with the mouth directed upwards; others are free-swimming with the mouth directed downwards.

  4. STRUCTURE • The cnidaria are true metazoa* with 2 body layers - an outer epidermis and an inner feeding surface or gastrodermis. Between them is the non-cellular mesoglea, a gelatinous material which differs in thickness and structure amongst the different types of cnidarians.

  5. FEEDING • Some species of jellyfish do not use their nematocysts for food capture, but instead feed on suspended zooplankton and organic matter, drawn into the coelenterons* by currents of water generated by flagellae of the gastrodermal cells. • Others do use nematocysts, which can be charged with venom. The most potent is found in the tropical sea wasps or box jellies. A sting from a sea wasp can cause death in humans within twenty minutes!

  6. DIGESTIVE • The digestive jellifishs are the 'stomachs' of the colony and respond quickly to the presence of food, wriggling and twisting until they fasten their flexible mouths to it. Once attached they become all mouth, spreading out over the surface of the morsel. The resting polyp measures only 1-2 mm in diameter but the mouth may expand to more than 20 mm. They digest the food by secreting a full range of enzymes that variously break down proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

  12. QUESTION • 1) WHICH IS ABOUT THE CINDARIA? • a) jellyfish b) echinodermuta c) annelida • d) ctenophora • 2) HOW DO THE JELLYFISH CIRCULATORY?

  13. ANSWER • 1) A. Jellyfish • 2)
