  3. Partner Share • Think about why it is important for people to have the ability to adapt to new and different places. • Consider this week’s question. • How have you adapted to the place where you live?

  5. Let’s Talk About • Turn to page 104-105 • How do maps help you in unfamiliar surroundings? • What did the person in the truck do before beginning to relocate? • What is the teacher doing? • How do people adapt to new places?

  6. Immigration • How hard do you think it would be to start over in another country? • Do you think it would be harder if you didn’t speak English? • Immigration Video

  7. Listen: • The story “A Legacy of Courage” is about a woman who immigrated to the United States from Russia. Listen for the words: • Opportunities • Courageous • Obstacles • perseverance

  8. Amazing Words • Opportunities- good chances • I had several opportunities to learn about plants. • Courageous- is the act of being brave in the face of danger • She was so courageous when she rescued the family from the fire. • Teach your partner these words.

Amazing Words • Obstacles-barriers that prevent you from reaching something • She had to overcome many obstacles before joining the boys’ team. • Perseverance- continuing to do something even if it is hard to achieve success • It took great perseverance to learn to speak English and start a new life. • Teach these words to your partner.

  10. Generalize • Collect information about the topic: • Gather as many facts as you can about a topic or event • Look for relationships among the facts: • Ask yourself what the facts have in common and what links them?

Generalize • Form a general statement about the related facts: • Remember that when forming a generalization, all of the specific evidence must lead to the same general conclusion • Make sure your generalization is valid: • Keep in mind that your generalization must take into account all of the facts but must not make claims that the facts do not support.

  12. Generalize • Today we are going to read about a girl whose friend has moved away. • Let’s read the first paragraph. • We can generalize about April by using information in the text and our prior knowledge . Infer to make a generalization about April. • She usually makes friends easily.

  14. Vocabulary • Cavities-holes in teeth • I had no cavities at my dental exam. • Combination- set of numbers to open a lock • I forgot the combination for my locker. • Teach your partner these words.

  15. Vocabulary • Demonstrates- shows • She demonstrates how to kick a soccer ball. • Episode- part of a series • We watched the final episode together. Teach your partner these words.

  16. Vocabulary • Profile- public image • Her job was to improve the profile of the restaurant. • Strict- tough • His dad was really strict on his bed time. Teach your partner these words.

  17. Spelling • Suffix –able – means “able to be” commonly added to complete words to form adjectives • Adapt + able = adaptable • Forget + able = forgetable

  18. Spelling • Suffix-ible- commonly added to roots than to complete words • Vis + ible = visible • leg + ible = legible • Tang + ible = tangible

  19. Indefinite Pronouns • Pronouns that don’t take the place of a particular noun. • All are welcome to the birthday party tonight. • Anyone can play the game as long as they follow the rules. • Let's play a game!

  20. Reflexive Pronouns • Singular: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself • Plural: ourselves, yourselves, themselves • Reflects back on the subject • John saw me. • Why does he blame you? • Let's answer these questions

  21. Writing • Persuasive writing; • Introductory paragraph-your position • Each paragraph should focus on your evidence • Describe and then prove the opposing views key points wrong • Restate and reinforce the thesis and supporting evidence
