  1. Designing Smart Facilities for Distance Learning Environments Presented by Israel Fletes UCR - Multimedia Technologies

Background • UCR received a large donation in support of a new campus in Palm Desert (Palm Springs area) • Design and Construction carried out the design and recommendation process for building, furniture, landscaping and AV • Computing was given a copy of the AV consultant’s recommendations on the new campus technology • The technology plan was extremely limited • AVC-Computing challenged the recommendation by having the computing team generate a UCR design of the AV, phones and network

  3. Objective • Build a campus with a standard suite of presentation technology • The technology must be supported via the network • All rooms need videoconferencing devices

  4. Why are we doing this? • New Remote Campus • 45 minute drive • No Provision for Technical Staff • Campus Focus • Entrepreneurial Center for Management. • Mostly Professional Students • New Campus is still being built

Consultant Recommended • Room had a budget of $350K to all technology • Available $$ were consumed in 2 large lecture halls • 12 rooms with no technology • UCR used existing plans to generate a technology plan for this building • Plans were approved by budget office and design and construction office

  8. General Meeting Spaces UCR Plan calls for 14 rooms with Technology • Classrooms • Conference Rooms • Lecture Halls • Multipurpose Rooms

  9. Selection of Technology Based on recent technology plans • Original 4 year Classroom Technology Plan • New Classroom Technology Plan – 4 more years • eClassrooms

  10. UCR Classroom TechnologyOriginal Plan • Equip G.A. Classroom with video playback and LCD Projector • 50 Rooms over a 4 year Cycle (10 added later) • Standard Setup Across all classrooms by profile • Type A (up to 80 seats) • Type B (81-140 seats) • Type C (greater than 140) • Type X (special rooms)

  11. UCR Classroom Technology 4 More Years • Provide common controllers that can be supported via the campus network • Add computers in every classroom (thin-clients or with software to be managed) • Enhance the available technology • Replace Projectors

  12. UCR Classroom TechnologyeClassrooms • Uses videoconferencing equipment and IP-based computer lab management software to incorporate two multimedia labs into a single virtual classroom.
