  2. Manifest Destiny The destiny of the United States to expand its territory from sea to sea. John L. O’Sullivan came up with the slogan in 1845.

  3. Oregon Country It is a huge area of land between the Rocky Mountains and the and the Pacific Ocean, North of California. Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana came from this territory. The treaty was with Great Brittan. The Oregon Trail was 2,000 miles, it started in the Mississippi Valley, and it went over the Great Plains

  4. Texas The main is Texas won its independence and wanted to be part of the United States. When the idea of Manifest Destiny started, Texas conflict started. Stephen F. Austin led the Old 300 into Texas. The Mexicans made it impossible for the current settlers in Texas to invite friends or family that currently live in the United States. The President of Mexico in 1833 was Santa Anna The Alamo was a mission battle where many great Texas heroes that died there. The Mexicans beat the Texans there. The Texans declare independence on March 2, 1836 in Washington on the Brazos. Sam Houston was the Texas leader. The battle cry was, “ Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!” The Texans won the War April 21, 1836 was when the battle happened. The annexation of adding another slave state would shake the balance of the states. This is why President Andrew Jackson didn’t annex Texas. The president when Texas became a state was John Tyler

  5. War With Mexico This territory included, New Mexico, Wyoming, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. They saw that New Mexico and California were worth gaining. John C. Fremont saw California as wild, scenic, beautiful, and full of resources. We thought extending to the Pacific was good because of gold. The United States thought that the American Mexican border was the Rio Grande, while the Mexicans thought it was the Nueces River. Polk held a cabinet meeting regarding the purchase of California and New Mexico.

  6. War With Mexico Cont. Fredrick Douglas didn’t like the war because he thought it would cause to much trouble. California flew the Bear Flag while independent. President Polk sent General Winfield to capture Mexico City. The peace treaty that ended the war was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in February of 1848. They agreed the border would be the Rio Grande. The new states were; California, New Mexico, and Arizona.Purchased in the Gadsden Purchase in 1853.

  7. New Settlers The Gold Rush happened in 1849 in California. The people who came to mine were called 49ers or prospectors. They had to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to get there. Mexico, Australia, and countries from Europe and South America sent 49ers. A boomtown is a town made overnight. San Francisco became a boomtown moving from a small village to a population of about 20,000. Levi Strauss was a miner and he made the first denim pants. The Mormons moved to Utah to fulfill their vision of a good daily life. The founder of the Mormons was Joseph Smith. A mob in Illinois killed him. Brigham Young took over after the death of Joseph Smith. They settled in the Great Salt Lake, and eventually President Fillmore established the Utah Territory. Utah became a state in 1896

Causes and Effects of Westward Expansion Causes Effects • Americans accepted Manifest Destiny. • As the East becomes more crowded, Americans want more land. • The West contains furs, lumber, and precious metals. • Native Americans forced off their lands. • United States wars with Mexico. • The United States extends from Atlantic to Pacific.
