  12. 21st Century Skills • Critical thinking, systems thinking, collaborative problem solving. • These were difficult to produce with iPads. Instead we took the angle of using these to help us improve our own teaching strategies and best practice. These are not developmentally appropriate nor conducive to the subject matter for first grade.

  13. 21st Century Skills • Global Awareness: Google Earth. • Interactive Communication: swapped iPads and listened to another student’s fluent reading as they followed along in the story. • Scientific Inquiry: new students to groups had to show some degree of self inquiry to manage given tasks. • Data analysis: stoplight charts

  14. Unintended outcomes • Pre/Post Technology Use Test wordings. • VGA Cord. • Student movement within groups. • iPad syncing. • Noisy apps. • Use of websites.

  15. “Aha” Moments • Letter reversals: ABC Tracer. • Fluency app: Talking Tom. • Comfort level of students with iPads. • Motivation: time on task.

  16. Time on Task

  17. Intentional Sharing: already occurred • Student presented at school board meeting in November. • Shared our iPad apps list. • IGH Student Led Technology Conference. • Staff training & sign out sheets. • Staff testimonials.

  32. In Conclusion… • Overall the use of iPads increased the four areas of data collections: sight words, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. • Studying and implementing 21st Century Skills in our teaching strategies has changed our teaching. • Had a vision of what we thought would happen, but through the process we were very flexible and made several adaptations. • Working with digital natives helped us learn too.
