  2. Mermaid Mythology Mermaids: • Enchant sailors with singing and music, distracting them from their work often causing fatal accidents • Feared by sailors because they are considered a sign of bad luck • Various cultures have similar figures

  4. 18th and 19th c. Edo Japan • Japanese fishermen crafted mermaids for sideshow carnivals by stitching the upper bodies of monkeys onto the bodies of fish
