Accountability • Students are given a Individualized Learning Plan • Receive accommodations for testing and classroom lessons • There is a process to their instruction with specific outcomes expected
How do we know? • Home Language Survey (placed with Registration forms at the schools) • Screening for placement • Permission from the parents • Placement in the ESL program

How do we teach them? • Use of WIDA Standards • Levels of Language Proficiency • Language of Learning • ACCESS testing for English Language Learners • Goal is for students to understand, speak, read and write in English in order to function in the American Society, and acquire a level of English proficiency that will allow them to be successful in academic areas
They are still kids… • We recognize the transition can and will be tough for these students • We are grateful for the other students that help in ways teachers can not
Assessments • Growth in the English Language • ACCESS for ELLs testing (February) • In most cases, SOL testing
Collaboration • ESL and Grade Level teachers must work together to provide support to the students • ESL teachers must share the level of the students and academic goals of the students in order to be fully supported
Title III Grant • Has purchased 4 iPad 4’s that teachers use to help support language acquisition • Is also being used to provide opportunities for staff development in partnership with neighboring cities/counties with larger ESL populations • Is being used to send ESL teachers and classroom teachers to trainings and other professional development opportunities
