  4. Summary The chapter starts as Cal, Beth, Audrey, and Ward are all outside watching Charlie and Kerry. Calvin then places third in a golf tournament. He says he didn’t mind winning, but he actually did. To celebrate, Ward suggests and plans the dinner to celebrate. Before they go out to dinner, Cal ends up getting drunk. Beth gets mad and thinks that Cal blames her for Conrad attempting suicide. Cal tries to calm her down, but she doesn’t want him to comfort her. Cal remembers all the events that transpired with Conrad. Ever since Conrad attempted suicide, Cal realizes that Beth has been acting different.

  5. Important Quote “Mother’s don’t hate their sons! I don’t hate him! But he makes demands on me! He tries to blackmail me!” -Beth (pg. 238) This quote is significant because it goes to show that Beth and Conrad don’t have a great relationship with each other. They need to work their problems out with each other.

  6. Major Conflict Beth is finally opening up about Conrad’s death.

  7. 5 literary terms Flashback: When Calvin remembers knocking on the locked bathroom door, begging his son to let him in, and seeing him lie motionless in the hospital. Generalization: Calvin, Beth, and Conrad all need to work things out with one another. Inference: Beth doesn’t know the real reason why Conrad committed suicide. Irony: When Beth tells Ward to make sure that his kids don’t drown because her son died of drowning. Perspective: The family needs to settle everything before things get uglier.

  8. Setting Ward, Audrey, Beth, and Calvin are all outdoors watching Charlie and Kerry swimming in the pool.

  9. Discussion Questions 1. Why did Beth wait so long to finally speak about Conrad’s suicide attempt? 2. Should Beth forgive her son?
