What is Distance Education • Instructional delivery that does not constrain the student in the same location as the instructor. • Historically it meant correspondence study. • Educational activities which interactively link two or more people at two or more locations. • It is a tool for improving and increasing access to the education experience.

  4. Why distance Education • A need for access • A need for flexibility and choice • the possibilities of Distance Education • Ongoing and flexible learning

  5. History and Building Blocks • In 1840 Issac Pitman, started correspondence course • 1969, British Open University • 1971, Satellite use for Distance Education • Instructor Preparation/ Training • Technology • program Management

  6. Type of Students and How it is used • Where people need improved access to information. • Need to share resources. • Instructor must travel to distant locations in order to communicate. • Learners who face schedule conflicts from career and family.

  7. Media used • Telephone • Facsimile • Email and voice mail • Radio • Television • Satellite broadcast • Video conferencing • Internet

  8. Advantages to the students • Increased access to different courses. • Time flexibility in scheduling personal time. • Individualized attention by the instructor at the students pace. • Less travel to get to the school. • More time to concentrate on the study topic.

  9. Advantages to the institution • Increase in the total number of enrollment. • Added interest to the instructors who like to do distance education. • No need to build new building structure to accommodate the added enrolment list.

Disadvantages • The quality of the distance education. • More money need to improve the technology. • Program development cost and marketing can add to the expenses. • Need for developing world class education material. • Need for staff training. • Increased cost to students. • maintaining student contacts.

Summary • Provide excellent opportunity for students to peruse their future. • The distance education allow people to periodically update their knowledge by fostering life long learning. • Distance education will enable partnership between institutions, businesses , between states and between countries.
