JAPAN 2010 Australian road safety 33rd APEC Transportation Working Group, Tokyo, Japan, October 10-14 2010 • Around 1,500 road deaths and 30,000 serious injuries each year • Annual cost of crashes is A$18 billion/$27 billion • Road deaths declined by 18% between 2000 and 2009 • However, progress has been slower than expected • National Road Safety Strategy 2001-2010 set a target of 5.6 deaths per 100,000 population by end of 2010 • Actual rate to August 2010 was 6.3 deaths per 100,000 people

JAPAN 2010 Young drivers 33rd APEC Transportation Working Group, Tokyo, Japan, October 10-14 2010 • Young drivers are significantly over-represented in road trauma statistics • drivers aged 17-25 years make up 14% of licence holders but are involved in 25% of all fatal and serious injury crashes • Young drivers are most at risk in the first year after gaining their licence • Australian states have introduced graduated licensing to reduce the risks in the early stages of driving: • zero BAC, passenger and night driving restrictions, mobile phone bans, restrictions on high-power vehicles, higher penalties

JAPAN 2010 Motorcycle safety 33rd APEC Transportation Working Group, Tokyo, Japan, October 10-14 2010 • 225 riders killed in 2009 and about 7000 hospitalised • Rider deaths increased by 18% from 2000 to 2009 • reflects the growth in motorcycling activity over the decade • Riders aged over 45 years account for much of the upward trend in casualties • Riders are 30 times more likely to be killed than car occupants (per distance travelled) • Young riders are most at risk
